Situated in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, the hill station of Lansdowne is a cantonment town and the head quarters of Garhwal Rifles regiment. Surrounded by thick oak and pine forests, Lansdowne is 150 km from Dehrad
    un.

Unlike the other popular hill stations in Uttarakhand, Lansdowne manages to mesmerize its tourists with its natural beauty and pleasant quietness.

Lansdowne got its name from Lord Lansdowne who was the Viceroy of India when the hamlet was found in 1887. It was developed as a cantonment town for the Garhwal Rifles regiment.
Initially known as Kaludanda, Lansdowne is home to one of the most ancient temples in the country- Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple. Large numbers of people visit the tiny hamlet during Mahashivratri.

Lansdowne is a perfect place for trekking, bird watching, boating, etc. The thick forest surrounding the hamlet is also ideal location for nature lovers to undertake jungle treks.
    WHERE TO STAY

There are limited accommodation options in Lansdowne. Apart from hotels and few lodges, there are quite a few rest-houses as well. Many of the rest-houses and hotels are located at Dhura.

Apart from GMVN rest-houses, Army Welfare Board rest-houses, PWD inspection bungalows and Uttaranchal Forest Department base camp are also available for budget travellers. Budget accommodation is also available at the dharamshala maintained by Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple.

The hill station tends to get crowded during May-June. It is advisable to book rooms in advance if one is visiting Lansdowne during these months.

    WHERE TO EAT

There are limited eating options in Lansdowne. Momos and parathas are popular in the small restaurants of Lansdowne. Most of the restaurants are found near Gandhi Chowk.

The restaurants attached to hotels serve a variety of cuisines like Indian, Chinese and Continental.

BEST TIME TO VISITLansdowne can be visited all through the year. However, during winter it tends to get very cold. Summers are pleasant in the hill-station. March- November is the best time to visit Lansdowne.

Rosary Church Ruins, Shettihalli, Hassan, Karnataka, India

    * The Shettihalli Church is believed to have been built around 450 years ago and represents a Gothic architecture.
    * Shettihalli is a small village situated on the banks of the Gorur-Hemavathy reservoir, about 25 kilometres from Hassan in Karnataka.
    * The Hemavathy River backwaters submerge the church, but the water recedes during the summer time and tourists ca
n visit the ruins of the church during this time.
    * Prayers are held once, with lamps lighting up the church during this time.
    * Even when the church is half under the water, tourists can go near it on a coracle.
    * The Shettihalli church ruins strike a start contrast to the vividly coloured landscape. That is what makes Shettihalli so special as it offers glamour all the year round.
    * In its hey days and prior to the construction of the reservoir at Gorur, Shettihalli used to be a very rich agricultural hamlet that was known for its sunflower fields.
    * During the monsoons and when the reservoir is near to its brim, the Shettihalli church is nearly submerged except for its top most spire.
    * Apart from its idyllic setting, this place is also considered fantastic for birding too, birds like grey heron, Indian pond heron, painted stork, little cormorant, egrets, river tern, Brahminy kites etc.

[IMG]Vagamon, Idukki and Kottayam District Border, Kerala.
    * It is a beautiful and unexploited hill station (a small town) on the border of Idukki and Kottayam district in K
    erala.
    * It is comprised of a beautiful series of hillocks, valleys and cascading waterfalls that make it the ideal getaway for tourists.
    * Take a walk along the narrow, mist covered zigzag roads that wind up the hills and experience true bliss.
    * For adventure seekers, there is an option of trekking, para gliding or rock climbing.
    * Quite recently there is a buzz about resorts and stay in and around Vagamon, or else this was kind of an unknown land to many.
    * One of the main attraction in Vagamon is the drive itself through the tea gardens and walk through lush green meadows.
    * The hill station has a chain of 3 beautiful hills called Thangal hill, Murugan hill and Kurismala that give an enchanting feel to this beautiful hill station.
    * This place also offers space for spiritual activities. The peaceful surroundings with cool and soft breeze blowing across the valley makes it a perfect place for meditation.
    * If you are willing to experience the peace of mind then Vagamon provides you, the perfect conditions.

    Kangchenjunga, India-Nepal border, India

    * It is the third highest mountain of the world with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft) and located along the India-Nepal border in the Himalayas.
    * Kangchenjunga is also the name of the section of the Himalayas and means "The Five Treasures of Snows", as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 m (27,720 ft).
    * The treasures represent the five repositories of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books.
    * Three of the five peaks – main, central, and south – are on the border of North Sikkim in India and Taplejung District of Nepal, while the other two are completely in Taplejung District.
    * The Kangchenjunga Himal includes twelve more peaks over 7,000 m (23,000 ft).
    * Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations made by the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest was the highest and Kangchenjunga the third-highest.
    * Kangchenjunga was first climbed on May 25, 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band, who were part of a British expedition.
    * The name Kangchenjunga stems from Bhutia and Tibetan languages.
