    Hi Everyone,

What is considered a good tip in American restaurants? What percentage of our bill should we tip if we think the waiter or waitress ...

    a. Wasn't attentive or courteous enough
    b. Did a good job but didn't go over and above i.e. standard service
    c. Went over and above, courteous, friendly and attentive

Secondly, should we add a tip to our bill if we go to buffett lunches?

    Thanks for your help.

    Tricky tipping:)

    Dear Shakila,

Yes, it is a bit tricky. But the bottom line is, one Must tip! All we have to do is remember that the person serving us is not paid much. Their pay is nominal and it is only tips that make their work worthwhile. The younger members of our family think twenty percent is the standard tip and tip more if they are particulary happy with the service. Fifteen percent is a fair enough tip. We generally pay twenty and sometime end up on fifteen percent if we are annoyed with the service.
    Hope that helps.

    L, Kamla

PS: Yes, we have tipped fifteen at buffets.
