Thiruppavai - Andal's Divine Melodies.

மார்கழி மாதம் 3ம் நாள். ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை.





ஓங்கி உலகளந்த உத்தமன் பேர்பாடி
நாங்கள் நம் பாவைக்குச் சாற்றிநீர் ஆடினால்,
தீங்கின்றி நாடெல்லாம் திங்கள்மும் மாரிபெய்து
ஓங்கு பெருஞ்செந்நெ லூடு கயல் உகளப்
பூங்குவளைப் போதில் பொறிவண்டு கண்படுப்ப,
தேங்காதே புக்கிருந்து சீர்த்த முலைபற்றி
வாங்கக் குடம் நிறைக்கும் வள்ளல் பெரும்பசுக்கள்
நீங்காத செல்வம் நிறைந்தேலோ ரெம்பாவாய்.

ராகம் - Arabhi- Adi.

If we sing the praise of Him,
Who grew big and measured the world,
And worship our Goddess Pavai,
Then would there be at least three rains a month,
And the red paddy plants would grow big,
And in their fields would the fish swim and play,
And the spotted bees after sipping honey,
To their hearts content,
Would sleep in the flower themselves
After having their fill,
And the cows with big udder
Would fill milk pots to the brim,
And healthy cows and never diminishing wealth,
Would fill the country,
And all this I assure by our vratham / practice.

Here is the Tamil meaning of the 2nd Pasuram:

சிறுமியரே! நம் பரந்தாமன் வாமன அவதாரத்தில் மூன்றடிகளால் விண்ணையும் மண்ணையும் அளந்து தன்னுடையதாக்கிக் கொண்ட உத்தமன். அவனது சிறப்பைக் குறித்து பாடி, நம் பாவைக்கு மலர்கள் சாத்தி வழிபடுவதற்கு முன் நீராடச் செல்வோம். இந்த விரதமிருப்பதால், உலகம் முழுவதும் மாதம் மும்முறை மழை பெய்து தண்ணீர் இல்லாத குறையைப் போக்கும். மழை காரணமாக வயல்களில் செந்நெல் செழித்து வளரும். மீன்கள் வயலுக்குள் பாய்ந்தோடி மகிழும். குவளை மலர்களில் புள்ளிகளையுடைய வண்டுகள் தேன் குடிக்க வந்து கிறங்கிக் கிடக்கும். வள்ளல் போன்ற பசுக்கள் பாலை நிரம்பத்தரும். என்றும் வற்றாத செல்வத்தை இந்த விரதம் தரும்.

"Pavai" is a beautiful Tamil word for young woman. During this month of 'Margazhi' young girls are intiated into our traditional worship routines like getting up early, taking bath, clean up the house and front yard, decorate with colourful Rangolis, sing and perform prayers for a better future life as a married woman, and be immersed in divine thoughts throughout the day, thus having 'Nonbu' meaning Vrat. So 'Pavai Nonbu' is the Vrat observed by young women during all the 30 days in Margazhi.

Here "Pavai " doesn't refer to any goddess.
