Hi friends!

You all have been a great support in all times. Thank you very much for that. And this time too, I am in need of your help.

Long story short

got married in 2009 - awesome married life - husband, phd student in US, am studying masters correspondence course - had pregnancy plan at the back of the mind - all of a sudden got pregnant unexpectedly in april 2011 - but was happy - had a bad miscarriage in june 2011 citing the embroyo was weakly formed but no fault of mine - mentally upset for sometime - but overcame now..

Now, both me and DH have decided that this is the perfect time for us to plan for a baby by the end of this month or next month. I have certain questions to clarify as I don't want to miss out any small detail after having an experience..atleast half :)

- My OB GYN advised to take pre natal tablets even before trying to get pregnant so that everything is strong and nothing goes wrong. My question is have any of you tried like that?

- I have been hitting the gym almost every weekday and workout..as in do elliptical for 30 mins at resistance of 10 at a slow pace. Can I do the same or half of it once I get pregnant or anticipating good news? I have heard stress can harm the baby..but does a basic exercise or walking also hurts?

- When I got pregnant the first time, I wanted to see a doctor as I din't have a personal GYN at that time. But I din't get an appointment for 45 days pregnant as they told me that generally doc would see only by 9th week or so.. but after miscarriage, my present doc advised that I should make an appointment and tell that I had a bad miscarriage and so I am concerned. Now my question is, once I find I am pregnant from a home test, should I fix an appointment with my gyn? or what should I do immediatly?

- I am having an exam around May-June ish. If I get pregnant, when is the best time to fly? I will definitely ask my doc, by I want to know the experience..Is it tough to travel continuously? Alone?

- Is there a fertility test calculator just like home-pregnancy test? If yes, is it available in local grocery store in US?

That's it for now..Detailed answers are appreciated. If things go as planned, will ask questions, if any.

Thanks for your time ladies. Have a happy day!

Regards,
Jenny

yes most of the gynaec advise to take prenatals,,you can try any OTC prenatals available at walgreens, cvs, target ,i have been taking them last 5 -6 months,,one -a day, rainbow light, etc
No problem with exercise like walking or basic exercise 30 mins is just fine.don;t overdo in 2ww
yes most doctors won't see you here before 8 weeks, so u must take appointment as soon as you find out u are preggo..keep a physician on call, its generally easy to get appointments wiht them u can do pregnancy test with them also!!
yes First response fertility test is also available in many pharmacies.
hope i answered most of ur ques tions..good luck with the baby thing,,i am also TTC Other things i do is use OPKs avoid caffiene,alcohol..which u know right

Thank you very much sweet angel..This is relieving :) I definitely follow the dont's..I don't drink coffee anyday and staying away from alcohol too..Many thanks for your time. I have a few questions ..

- For my 1st time, I was new to the US and so I din't have a personal doc. But now I have one, but it was like just an annual check up. So, my doubt is, if I find out that I am prego, should I call my doc and fix an appointment? or how it is done normally? And, will the subsequent check ups be with my OB GYN? I am still trying to understand the system in US :)

Hey

Generally OBGYN will let u to have an appointment only by the end of 8th week. But in few cases , say u had a miscarriage in these cases they will permit for a early pregnancy appointment say somewhere by around 6 weeks to have a close monitoring of your pregnancy. This is one case.If this does not work out u could meet a family physician telling that you tested positive but again they will also do the same strip test to confirm the pregnany.

Here in US they don't do a blood test to confirm the pregnancy. Its just the strip test . My suggestion would be talk to your OBGYN telling her abt your miscarriage and let her know your worries so that she herself aould schedule a early pregnancy appointment .

And to answer your question its always good if u follow with youe OBGYN . Your following appointments would also be with your OBGYN.But make sure u talk with your OBGYN to know what you have to do after you test a positive
All the best!!!

Hi,

It is okay to workout 4-5 days a week but not rigorous ; ensure that you are not sweating too much or putting lot of pressure on doing exercises like not much weights lifting which usually here everyone does for toning.
But once you are conceived for at least 6-8 weeks avoid stressing your body bcos of ur previous MC.
Getting doctors appointment immediately is usually difficult prepare urself for this.

I am also on TTC and my mantra is after a week waiting for the missed period check HPT and if it comes +ve get an appointment immediately that's by u will know the developments are fine. Are you on PPO/HMO?

Start taking prenatal (vitamins + folic) tabs available in most of pharmacy at least before 3 months.
About fly better check with the doc they are best persons as they know ur body better at that time.

Good luck

take care

Hello Jenny Dear!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss and hugs to you. Do not worry its not your fault, its god’s wish. I too felt the same way when I had miscarriage a year and half ago. Hope you, I and every lady in here who are ttc would soon hold our baby… good luck!

Coming to your concerns I try as much as I can to answer…

I’m afraid, perhaps its not true, atleast in my case. There is still chances, generally most of early miscarriages happen due to chromosomal abnormalities, which is nothing to do with prenatals. I’ve been taking them since I’ve started ttc for 5years (its 4 years when I had miscarriage) but still had miscarriage. I think these are future beneficial for the baby when she/he is growing they help to form the body parts (like brain etc). So that’s why docs prescribe you take these prenatals once you get pregnant. But its better to start taking them before hand which makes your body healthy too..

The difference in one word is stress-is mental strain, exercise- is physical strain. So either one is not good for you or the future baby as well.

I asked this same question to my Physician first thing I saw her doing was laughing loudly and she said she never heard that kind of thing it seems. She also said it is just a myth that you should not exercise while you are in 2ww (the period from ovulation to first day of next period). Instead she said in fact its better to do exercise so that body and mind would be active which is a great source for baby to grow healthy. But you know what just in case to be safe side…

You can do exercises but try not to pressurize your abdomen. You can do any from the first day of period until ovulation and from ovulation until you see your next period you can go easy. Just do brisk walk and some routine exercises which are not too tiresome. If by god’s grace if you test positive then just do 1 hr walk make sure it is not on the treadmill just at home or go out. Again if you are a regular exerciser then its ok, but if you just started do not go vigorously.

First call you doc office and then they will tell you when to come for a blood/urine test to confirm the pregnancy. It all depends on hospital and their norms. In some hospitals they see when you are 8 weeks along and some see at 6-7 weeks. And in case if you are in treatment or a visiting gyn for trying to get pregnant then would see you a week or two after you see a positive. When I got pregnant my doc wanted me see the week I tested positive i.e. at end of 5th week and did blood work and scheduled for first Ultra Sound. So it all depends. But just in case if you are concern then as soon as you tested positive make a call and mention your concern and ask for an appointment. I think its not a big deal. But yeah generally docs schedule you an appointment for blood work/urine test and the same day they schedule your 9 months pregnancy calender plan which includes tests to be done, weeks to see the doc, vitamins to take, dos and don’ts.

I’d say if it is short time travel I would not be concerned. But if its little longer for say 3-4 hrs better to ask your doc. Perhaps if it is a flight journey I would not think it’s a problem, but if it is ground then I might talk with my doc. But generally elder say that you should be careful until you cross 3rd month since ‘till then the baby is very sensitive. So just try your best. If it is necessary then you do it with more caution.

There are a of bunch OPKs (ovulation predict kits) available in market. I use clear blue digital opk though its little expensive but I am very happy with this so far. Its easy to pin point the fertile days with this opk. You can find these pretty much anywhere. Next time when you go for shopping see/ask for opk then pick which ever you find easy to use. Or you can also chart your body's basal temperature that is the very first temperature of your body when first wake up and still on the bed. You can buy bbt thermometer (Basal Body Temperature Thermometer) but look for 2 decimal one also even more better if it is a digital one. You can google it or I believe there is one thread regarding this here in IL. I’ll try to find and post it for you the link.

Hope I answer your questions/concerns and also hope I am clear, let me know if in case I am not. Shoot me if you have any more, I’d gladly help as much as I can with in my experience. Good luck and baby dust to you.

Some tips/advises:

First and foremost please take this ttc as easy as you can… just enjoy every moment and forget that you are in ttc… it help you to get pregnant quickly as later a while of trying you can not stop yourself dominating you this feeling. So try this now itself…

I would highly advise you to see a gynec (or Reproductive Endocrinology in case you are late 20s or 30ish or if there is any problems in pregnancy or ttc in your family) on regular basis as you already had miscarriage its better to do so, since she can run tests on you and advise so that you/your body will be on her observation.

Eat nutritious food and tell your hubby not to spend much time in the hot water and try avoiding hot baths, spa kind of stuff if at all he is into. Tell him to wear boxers instead (sorry for going too personal).

Make an appointment with doc and have the fertility tests done on you both if you have not yet. So that you can figure out what went wrong and prevent from go wrong.

Jenny, it does not matter which doc you have. I suppose you never schedule an appointment with your current gynec for ttc. I guess you just mentioned everytime for regular check up, so she is just testing pap smear etc kind tests. But what you would do is once you figure out good ob gyn or if you wish and like your present gynec then make an appointment with her mentioning them that you are trying to conceive and had miscarriage. Then they will schedule you the date and time. When you get to see doc just discuss about your concerns. Make sure you have note your all questions down on a paper. Tell her how long you guys have been trying and about miscarriage and your personal life. She would prescribe you some tests for you both. Once you both done those tests and make an appointment again with those results then from there on she will see you regularly. Once you get pregnant if there is nothing concern then you will continue seeing her through out your pregnancy, or in case she finds some risk or needs more attention on you/your pregnancy she would send you to RE (reproductive endocrinologist) who are the specialists and experts in this field. So they would continue take care about you/your pregnancy. Once they find everything ok and under control again they would send you back to your previous gynec whom you were seeing before going to RE. Generally this is the procedure as far as I know. Physicians are just primary care, they do not relate to any gynec issues/matters. they will recommend you to certain doc as per your health problem. this is what my experience here in US so far.

I know your confusion about docs and procedures, infact i was in your shoes before and also asked the ILites their advises/guidelines as you. But now after 6 years of stay in US I got to know now what it is all upto. But do not worry you will be just fine. Just call gynec or ask your regular physician for recommendation for gynec and schedule an appointment once you see her then she would tell you everything what you have to do once you get pregnant. Good Luck!

When i first got my +ve hpt, i took appointment with both my gynac and physician, because my gynac was on vacation i got appointment somewhere after 8 week and the one with physician got immediaelty,,unfortunately the day i went to the physician for test, i started bleeding heavily in evening!!!( you dont need to do it everytime, i guess it was my first time, so i was too much impatient)i had to see a covering gynac immediately.Later i went to see my original gyanc after she came back..there was no reason to worry.
you shuld definitely to go to a gynaec only for pregnancy and delivery,,but if you dont get appointment for a long say 8-9 weeks , you can do a pregnancy test with a general physician too,They will do HCG blood and urine test both and then can later take those reports to show to your gynaec if you want o confirm pregnancy,,but for emergency cases like miscarriage , your gynac will have to see u immediately!!hope you dont have to see that phase again.hope this helps
