    The Price
    A Novelette By Varalotti Rengasamy
    Part G

To start with they had one day in a week all for themselves.

But when shooting on foreign locales became an in-thing in the industry they could not see each other for months on end. To Ramkumar, it did not matter.

For he was surrounded always by eager and willing, beautiful women and quite a number of fans ready to do anything for him. But for Vidya the loneliness was killing.

But she resolved not to take that up as an issue and spoil the party.

Vidya could not hold on to her resolve when Ramkumar’s name started appearing in the gossip columns. It was when the glamour queen Neha Kapoor starred opposite to him in a number of films.

Neha Kapoor was a buxom creature in her late twenties and the heart-throb of youth all over the country. When the magazines eulogised the Ramkumar-Neha match Ramkumar started looking at her deeply.

Chandar maintained a strict vigil over Ramkumar and did not allow him to fool around with actresses. Till then Ramkumar also did not think of anybody else other than Vidya. But Neha was a temptation which Ramkumar could not resist.

Neha Kapoor was not just a show-piece doll but a shrewed woman whose astuteness even outclassed that of Chandar. As Chandar arranged to keep them away she moved the coins in her own style to see to that Ramkumar was with her all the time.

While acting together in love scenes Neha would willingly exceed the limits set by the Director. The excesses could not escape the censors; but they had an impact on Ramkumar.

While shooting outdoors she arranged things in such a way to stay in a room adjacent to that of Ramkumar. Even an alert Chandar could not keep vigil all night and soon things got out of control.

She bought for herself and Ramkumar two exclusive cell phones (in addition to what they already had) and they used them to talk to each other for hours on end.

When tabloids questioned Neha Kapoor of her intimacy with Ramkumar, she would wantonly blush and issue a quaint denial which would set the rumour-mills aflame.

Raghavan had been fighting with his conscience for long; but against a glamorous, seductive, all-giving Neha his conscience was a poor fighter.

Predictably it lost the first round of battle and the physical distance between Ramkumar and Neha got reduced to absolute zero.

Vidya was shattered when she came to know of the affair. She had planned to confront Raghavan; but one night, Raghavan pre-empted her by confessing the affair himself.

“I’m sorry, Vidya. You see after all I am just an ordinary mortal. I have been acting intimate scenes with her for quite some time and in one weak moment the acting turned out to be real. She …. is….. carrying my child……”

Ramkumar thought the child-factor might turn the tables in his favour and Vidya might condone the affair. In spite of the fact that he and Vidya did not have any defects or problems they could not have a child during the past seven years.

But, child or no child, Vidya could not brook such an infidelity from the person she loved most in the world and for whom she had virtually sacrificed everything else.

Vidya screamed “NO” at the top of her voice and ran to Chandar’s room. Amidst sobs she told about Ramkumar and Neha Kapoor and the child. She begged Chandar to help her reclaim her husband. She didn’t leave him until he committed to solve the problem and remove Neha Kapoor once and for all from their lives.

As Chandar was requesting, pleading and even begging with the star, Vidya was by the door hearing every word he uttered and Ramkumar’s response to it.

Chandar even went to the extent of threatening to quit from the scene. But Ramkumar was unfazed. He now knew that he had outgrown Chandar and the latter could not destroy him or his image.

Ramkumar was hell bent on carrying on with Neha Kapoor and eventually marry her once Vidya agrees to a consent-divorce. Vidya suspected that he might have even got the legal papers ready.

Raghavan continued to argue that it won’t alter any thing for Vidya and she can continue to live in the same house and enjoy the same luxuries as she was used to so far. Or she can live independently at the other bungalow in Juhu.

Vidya who was overhearing these heartless words broke into a violent sob which she tried hard to muffle.

Chandar now measured up the situation. He chided himself for being too sentimental instead of approaching the problem with his cool and calculative intellect.

He wiped his eyes clean. He went aside and took out his cell phone and dialled a number. After making sure that the person at the other end had picked up the phone, he kept his mobile in his packet while it was still on. He talked in a voice much louder than necessary:

“Ok, Ramkumar, I will convince Vidya and ask her to grant a divorce to you so that you can marry that Kapoor lady. But as a person who made you what you are now I am asking just one favour.

“If not for Vidya’s sake grant it for my sake. You see I am a heart patient living on the edge of death. Before you marry that girl you will have to transfer all your assets in Vidya’s name. If you agree to do that I’ll convince Vidya. Agreed?”

Ramkumar felt relieved. Neither he or Neha cared a damn about his assets or her assets. So what’s the big deal?

Well, it is my boni this week!

    Varalotti,

Good! This episode was compelling. The sudden turn in characterisation- portraying Chander as a crude guy with a decent heart is a master writer stroke. Also, Raghavan succumbing to the wily charms of Bollywood and Neha, while losing sight of what is valuable is well sketched. I hope he returns to safe harbours.

I don't believe in lucky bonis or long FB. But I guess the fall in readership is merely coincidental. With summer, many of us are travelling and for many life is catching up. So rest assured, that lack of FB is not correlated to your standard of writing, you probably have more silent, ardent readers now.

    getting a little complex now

    Hello Sridhar,

I'm fed up of feeling sad for vidya. I think its time she comes out of her cocoon & plans her life ahead without Raghavan. Also, makes me wonder if success in career is proportional to failure in personal life of an individual. Chandar seems a better individual compared to our hero. so, wonder who is paying the price and for what??????

    Regards,

The name Neha Kapoor rings a bell in the mind ?

    My dear sridhar,
It is very sad to read about Vidya that " She begged Chandar to help her reclaim her husband " - does she really want back such a husband ?
Now, what respect can she have for him ?
Worse is "Raghavan continued to argue that it won’t alter any thing for Vidya and she can continue to live in the same house and enjoy the same luxuries as she was used to so far." It was not Raghavan, Vidya's husband, but Ramkumar, Neha's lover who must have uttered these words !
I repeat Meena's words" who is paying the price, for what? "

    Love & regards,
    Chithra.

Try however I might, I cannot write short F B s, Sridhar ! - they tend to become more long & less crisp !

    I am guessing

    Dear varlotti,
The episode is catchy. Iam guessing Neha is listening at the other end and will drop off Raghavan the moment she hears that he is transferring all property. And if Vidya chucks him out also?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Meenu

    Thanks Vidya

    Vidya,
thanks for the words of praise. The first lesson we learn in life is that no one is permanently good or permanently bad. While Chandar has turned for better Raghavan has taken a turn downhill. That's life.
While I respect your hopes for Raghavan, please don't forget that this story started with its own climax.
And a double thanks for attributing fall in readership to reasons other than the quality of my writing. Thats really soothing to a writer's mind.
    regards,
    Varalotti

    I am touched, Meena

    Hello Meena,
I am touched by what you feel for Vidya, my heroine. But I am also put off by the words, "fed up feeling sad". When you are fed up feeling sad, then you are no longer feeling sad. It is this kind of feeling that removes sympathy from our hearts.
About the other theory you have propounded that success in career is proportional to the failure in personal life, well, we have a lot of empirical evidence to vindicate your theory.
Only if we can stop for a while to think what's success then this theory will not hold good. But that may take aeons for the human race to understand that.
Who's paying the price for what? That question will linger in your mind long after you finish reading the serial.
Thanks for being there and thanks for your FB.
    regards,
    sridhar

    Many Pertinent Questions!

    Dear Chitra,
"Does she really want back such a husband?" A very pertinent question. If only Vidya had stopped to think on these lines her life would have been different.
I'll go one step down. Do I really want to be an actor? If Raghavan had raised this question then his life would have been happy and Vidya's happier.
The problem is that we, who watch these characters sitting comfortably in the sidelines can ask all the right questions. But the characters themselves who are in the midst of life and all its happenings do not normally have the luxury of stopping on the tracks and asking the right questions.
Raghavan and Ramkumar are two different names for the same person. But considering the change in the circumstances they have now become two different persons, poles apart in their character and way of thinking.
As I said to Meena, Who's paying price for what, is the question that would (andi should) always be in the minds of readers long after the serial is over. And if this question pops up at the right time and we listen to it, we can avert many tragedies in our lives. That's the message I want to convey.
For me, every FB is precious, long or short. Thanks for the prompt FB.
    regards,
    sridhar

It is a Sad Tale, Purnima!

    Dear Purnima,
thanks for reminding me to post the next episode. I was so immersed in my work that I almost forgot about the serial. You came on line to remind me about that.
This serial does not just seem like a sad tale; but is a sad tale. Like the lives of many people who end up paying a heavy price for what they want in life. Career advance bought at the price of family life, Wealth bought at the price of honesty and fame bought with deceit - the list is endless.
Meena righly questioned, "Who pays price for what?" We can make a sticker of this question and paste in the dressing room mirror. This question can avert many tragedies in life.
Whether Raghavan will transfer his assets to Vidya? Well, let's us wait and see - in the final episode, which I promise, will post on 11th August, God willing.
    regards,
    sridhar
