The everlasting charm of Andal's Thiruppavai.

The month of Marghazi which starts today, the 16th of December, is considered by our wise ancesters as the holiest period and conducive for spiritual pursuits cosmically. The period, from when the sun moves into the constellation of Dhanurrasi (or Sagittarius )and until it moves out to the constellation of Makara (or Capricorn) is known as Dhanurmasam. In Thiruppavai Andal gives a universal call to all people to recite the name and glories of Lord.We are told that this a the period in which Gods are physically present on Earth. This is the time when the whole family and society are to engage in spiritual activities in one form or other. Yatras are undertaken, Bhajans, Unjavritis and concerts are held. Young girls pray for a happy married life. Pavai Nonbu is a beautiful way of encouraging and training the young girls in the spiritual activities for her future role as a wife, mother, and the centre around which the house revolves.

In this thread I am glad to give a song a day for the 30 days of Marghazhi with meaning. I am glad to start with the first song of Thiruppavai, every song of which is known for its divinity, bhakthi, and literary excellence, beauty and simplicity.

மார்கழி மாதம் முதல் நாள்:

மார்கழித் திங்கள் மதிநிறைந்த நன்னாளால்;
நீராடப் போதுவீர்! போதுமினோ, நேரிழையீர்!
சீர்மல்கும் ஆய்ப்பாடிச் செல்வச் சிறுமீர்காள்!
கூர்வேல் கொடுந்தொழிலன் நந்தகோபன் குமரன்,
ஏரார்ந்த கண்ணி யசோதை இளஞ்சிங்கம்,
கார்மேனிச் செங்கண் கதிர்மதியம் போல்முகத்தான்
நாராயணனே, நமக்கே பறைதருவான்,
பாரோர் புகழப் படிந்தேலோ ரெம்பாவாய்.

1- நேர் இழையீர்-அழகிய ஆபரண்ங்களை அணிந்துள்ளவர்களே;
பறை-விப்பம்; ஏல்- கேள்; ஓர்-இதை நினைப்பாயாக்; ஏலோர்- பாதத்தை நிறைத்து கிடக்கும் சொல்; எம் பாவாய்- எம்முடைய பாவையே,
காமன் (மன்மதன்) மனைவி ரதி என்னும் கொள்ளலாம் (மேல் காமனை, நோற்கையாலே அவள் மனைவியான ரதியை சொல்லியதாகவும் ஆகும்.

It's Margali month, moon replete and the day is proper
We shall bathe, girls of Ayarpadi prosperous
Will you move out? You wealthy adorn'd fine jewels;
Narayana, son of relentless Nandagopala,
Whose job wielding a sharp spike ever alert and
The lion cub of Yasoda with eye gracious
And the lad with dark complexion, handsome eye
And face sunny bright pleasant as moon
Sure shall grant us the desire soon
To the esteem of this earth as a boon;
Oblige, involve, listen and consider, our damsel.

திருப்பாவை, பாசுரம்- 2.

வையத்துவாழ்வீர்காள்! நாமும்நம்பாவைக்குச்செய்யுங்கிரிசைகள்கேளீரோ! பாற்கடலுள்பையத்துயின்றபரமன்அடிபாடி,
நெய்யுண்ணோம்; பாலுண்ணோம்; நாட்காலைநீராடிமையிட்டெழுதோம்; மலரிட்டுநாம்முடியோம்;
செய்யாதனசெய்யோம்; தீக்குறளைச்சென்றோதோம்;
ஐயமும்பிச்சையும்ஆந்தனையும்கைகாட்டிஉய்யுமாறெண்ணிஉகந்தேலோரெம்பாவாய்.

பொருள்:

You who enjoy life on earth, listen!
The rituals for deity go through we duteous;
Chant the foot of the Supremo who had
Reposed in stealth on the ocean milky;
Bathe we early; relish not ghee or milk
Nor would kemp, nor adorn with flower beauteous;
Grace not with eyeliner; nor bid deeds forbidden;
Nor go around ear kiss tale or malicious gossip
Help the worthy and poor utmost by gift or alms toss'd
With mind pleasant, study the chores engross'd;
Listen and consider, our damsel.

திருப்பாவை- பாசுரம் 3.

ஓங்கி உலகளந்த உத்தமன் பேர்பாடி
நாங்கள் நம் பாவைக்குச் சாற்றி நீராடினால்
தீங்கின்றி நாடெல்லாம் திங்கள் மும்மாரி பெய்து
ஓங்கு பெருஞ்செந்நெல் ஊடு கயலுகள
பூங்குவளைப் போதில் பொறிவண்டு கண்படுப்ப
தேங்காதே புக்கிருந்து சீர்த்த முலை பற்றி
வாங்கக் குடம் நிறைக்கும் வள்ளல் பெரும்பசுக்கள்
நீங்காத செல்வம் நிறைந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

ராகம்- Arabhi- Adi.

பொருள்:

சிறுமியரே! நம் பரந்தாமன் வாமன அவதாரத்தில் மூன்றடிகளால் விண்ணையும் மண்ணையும் அளந்து தன்னுடையதாக்கிக் கொண்ட உத்தமன். அவனது சிறப்பைக் குறித்து பாடி, நம் பாவைக்கு மலர்கள் சாத்தி வழிபடுவதற்கு முன் நீராடச் செல்வோம். இந்த விரதமிருப்பதால், உலகம் முழுவதும் மாதம் மும்முறை மழை பெய்து தண்ணீர் இல்லாத குறையைப் போக்கும். மழை காரணமாக வயல்களில் செந்நெல் செழித்து வளரும். மீன்கள் வயலுக்குள் பாய்ந்தோடி மகிழும். குவளை மலர்களில் புள்ளிகளையுடைய வண்டுகள் தேன் குடிக்க வந்து கிறங்கிக் கிடக்கும். வள்ளல் போன்ற பசுக்கள் பாலை நிரம்பத்தரும். என்றும் வற்றாத செல்வத்தை இந்த விரதம் தரும்.

Should we sing the name of the magnanimous
Outgrown and meted the world and assent
To bathe for deity, rain it shall, pour country over
Thrice monthly with no despair;
Shall facilitate tall growth of fine paddy crop.
Carp to jump amidst like aquabatic feat,
Spotted bee to perch on lily fair and
Donor cows to stand still, with udders thick,
Allow milking to fill vessels copious;
To ordain never vanishing wealth bounteous;
Listen and consider our damsel.

ஆழி மழைக்கண்ணா! ஒன்று நீ கைகரவேல்
ஆழியுள் புக்கு முகந்துகொடு ஆர்த்தேறி
ஊழி முதல்வன் உருவம்போல் மெய்கறுத்து
பாழியந் தோளுடைப் பற்பநா பன்கையில்
ஆழிபோல் மின்னி வலம்புரிபோல் நின்றதிர்ந்து
தாழாதே சார்ங்கம் உதைத்த சரமழைபோல்
வாழ உலகினில் பெய்திடாய் நாங்களும்
மார்கழி நீராட மகிழ்ந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

பொருள்:

4- ஆழியுள் - சமுத்திரத்திற்குள்; ஆர்த்து - இடி இடித்து;
ஆழிமழைக் கண்ணா - கடல்போல் கருணை உள்ளம் படைத்த தலைவனான வருணனே, கண் பொன்றவனே; அண்ணனே;
கைகரவேல் - ஒழிக்கக் கூடாது; ஆழி - சக்கரம்; வலம்புரி - பாஞ்ச ஜன்ய சங்கு; சார்ங்கம் - சாரங்க வில்; தாழாது - கால தாமதம் செய்யாமல்-

விளக்கம்.

மேகத்திற்கு அதிபதியான பர்ஜந்யனே! நாங்கள் சொல்வதைக் கேள். உன்னிடம் ஒரு சொட்டு தண்ணீரைக் கூட வைத்துக் கொள்ளாதே. கடல் நீர் முழுவதையும் முகர்ந்து கொண்டு மேலே சென்று, உலகாளும் முதல்வனாகிய கண்ணனின் நிறம் போல் கருத்து, வலிமையான தோள்களையுடைய பத்மநாபனின் கையிலுள்ள பிரகாசமான சக்கரத்தைப் போல் மின்னலை வீசி, வலம்புரி சங்கு ஒலிப்பது போல் இடி ஒலியெழுப்பி, வெற்றியை மட்டுமே ஈட்டும் அவனது சார்ங்கம் என்னும் வில்லில் இருந்து புறப்படும் அம்புகளைப் போல் மழை பொழிவாயாக! அம்மழையால் நாங்கள் இவ்வுலகில் மகிழ்வுடன் வாழ்வோம். மார்கழி நீராடலுக்காக எல்லா நீர்நிலைகளையும் நிரப்பி எங்களை மகிழ்ச்சியடையச் செய்வாயாக.

Oh rain God who comes from the sea,
Enter the sea, please, and bring water to your fill,
And with zest and sound take it up,
And like the God of the deluge become black,
And shine like the holy wheel in the hands,
Of The God Padmanabha who has powerful biceps,
And make booming pleasing sounds,
Like the right spiraled conch,
And rain with out stop like the arrow storm,
From Saranga the bow of Vishnu and descend on us,
To make this world happy,
And to help us take bath in month of Margahzhi..

திருப்பாவை- பாசுரம்- 5.

மாயனை மன்னு வடமதுரை மைந்தனை
தூய பெருநீர் யமுனைத் துறைவனை
ஆயர் குலத்தினில் தோன்றும் அணிவிளக்கை
தாயைக் குடல்விளக்கம் செய்த தாமோதரனை
தூயோமாய் வந்து நாம் தூமலர்த் தூவித்தொழுது
வாயினால் பாடி மனத்தினால் சிந்திக்க
போய பிழையும் புகுதருவான் நின்றனவும்
தீயினில் தூசாகும் செப்பேலோர் எம்பாவாய்..

ராகம், தாளம்:
ஸ்ரீ- ஆதி.

மாயன் - மாய வித்தை செய்பவன்; மந்திரக் காரன்; மறைந்திருப்பவன்;
ஏமாற்றுபவன்; விநோதன்; மாய நிறமுடையவன்; மேகவண்ணன்;
மன்னு - நிலைத்துள்ள; புகுதருவான் நின்றனவும் - பின்பு (நம்மை அறியாமல்) வருபவையும்..

பொருள்:

வியப்புக்குரிய செயல்களைச் செய்பவனும், பகவானும்,
மதுராபுரியில் அவதரித்தவனும், பெருகியோடும் தூய்மையான நீரைக் கொண்ட யமுனை நதிக்கரையில் விளையாடி மகிழ்ந்தவனும், ஆயர்குலத்தில் பிறந்த அழகிய விளக்கு போன்றவனும், தேவகி தாயாரின் வயிற்றுக்கு பெருமை அளித்தவனும், இவனது சேஷ்டை பொறுக்காத யசோதை தாய் இடுப்பில் கயிறைக் கட்ட அது அழுத்தியதால் ஏற்பட்ட தழும்பை உடையவனும் ஆன எங்கள் கண்ணனை, நாங்கள் தூய்மையாக நீராடி, மணம் வீசும் மலர்களுடன் காண புறப்படுவோம். அவனை மனதில் இருத்தி அவன் புகழ் பாடினாலே போதும்! செய்த பாவ பலன்களும், செய்கின்ற பாவ பலன்களும் தீயினில் புகுந்த தூசு போல காணாமல் போய்விடும்.

விளக்கம்:

"உன்னைப் பெற்றதனால் அவள் மற்றவராலே போற்றப்பட வேண்டும் என்பது ஒரு தாய்க்கு பிள்ளை செய்ய வேண்டிய கடமை. தேவகி தாய்க்கு கண்ணனை பெற்றதால் பெருமை. "ஈங்கிவனை நான் பெறவே என்ன தவம் செய்து விட்டேன் என்று அவள் பெருமைப்படுகிறாள். குழந்தைகள், பெற்றவர்களுக்கு நல்ல பெயர் வாங்கித் தரவேண்டும் என்பது இதன் உட்கருத்து.

To Him the enchanter of all, To Him the son of Mathura in the north, To Him who played and frolicked, In the shores of holy Yamuna, To Him who is the ornamental lamp, Of the family of cow herds, And to the Damodhara who made, His mothers womb holy, We came after a holy bath, And offered pure flowers at his feet, And sang with our mouth, And brought the thoughts of him in our mind, And we were sure, That all our mistakes of the past, And all that we will do in future, Will vanish as ashes in fire, Oh, Goddess Pavai.

புள்ளும் சிலம்பினகாண்; புள்ளரையன் கோயிலில்
வெள்ளை விளிசங்கின் பேரரவம் கேட்டிலையோ?
பிள்ளாய்! எழுந்திராய், பேய்முலை நஞ்சுண்டு,
கள்ளச் சகடம் கலக்கழியக் காலோச்சி,
வெள்ளத்தரவில் துயிலமர்ந்த வித்தினை,
உள்ளத்துக் கொண்டு முனிவர்களும் யோகிகளும்
மெள்ள எழுந்து அரியென்ற பேரரவம்
உள்ளம்புகுந்து குளிர்ந்தேலோ ரெம்பாவாய்.

பறவைகள் ஒரு சேர ஒலி எழுப்புகின்றன. கருடனின் தலைவனான எம்பெருமான் சன்னதியில் வெண்சங்கு ஊதும் ஓசை உனக்கு கேட்கவில்லையா? எழுந்திராய் பெண்ணே! பூதகியின் விஷப் பாலை அருந்தி அவளைக் கொன்றவன் கண்ணன். வண்டிச் சக்கரம் வடிவில் வந்த சகடாசுரனை தன் திருவடிகால் வதம் செய்தவன். திருப்பாற்கடலில் ஆதிசேஷன் மேல் பள்ளி கொண்டு உலகில் துன்பம் ஏற்படும் போது நம்மையெல்லாம் காக்க அவதாரங்கள் எடுத்து அதற்கு காரணியாக விளங்குபவன் அந்த நாராயணன். முனிவர்களும், யோகிகளும் 'ஹரி ஹரி' என்று உச்சரிக்கும் ஜப ஒலி நம் செவிகளின் வழியாக இதயத்தில் சென்று குளிர்விப்பதைக் கேள் என்கிறாள் ஆண்டாள். வெளிப்பகைவகளைக் காட்டிலும் நமக்கு இருக்கும் உள் பகைவர்களான கோபம் குரோதம் காமம் வஞ்சம் ஆசை போன்றவைகளால் நமக்கு துன்பம் அதிகம் வருகின்றது. அதை அழிக்கும் வல்லமையுடையவன் நாராயணன். ஆகவே அவனைப் பணிவோம் எழுந்திராய் என்று இப்பாசுர வழி தோழியை எழுப்புவது பூல நம் அனைவரையும் ஆண்டாள் எழுப்புகிறாள்.

Did you not hear alternate twittering birds making loud noises, Did you not hear the loud sound of white conch,
From the temple of the king of Garuda, Oh, girls please wake up, Let us hear the holy sounds of “Hari , Hari”.
From the savants and sages, Calling him who drank the poisonous milk from the ghost,
Him who kicked and killed the ogre of the cart, And him who sleeps on the great serpent Adi Sesha
So that it goes through our mind, And make our mind cool, Oh, Goddess Pavai.
