The 57th National Film Awards were awarded yesterday and Amitabh Bachhan grabbed the BEST ACTOR award for his performance in “Paa”. 3 Idiots won the title of the Best Popular Movie. The Malayalam Drama “Kutty Srank” bagged five awards including the Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay, Best Costume and Best Cinematography. This Mammoothy starrer shared a Special Jury Recognition with Bollywood superhit “Kaminey” and Malayalam film “Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja”. Delhi 6 received the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. Rakesh Omprakash Mehra can indeed be very proud of this film shot in the bylanes of Old Delhi.

Hi friends, Shyam Benegal’s Well Done Abba was chosen as the Best Film on Social Issues. “Paa” also won the Best Hindi Film. Arundhuti Nag won the Best Supporting Actress for Paa. Dominie Till and Christein Tinsley won the Best Make-Up for their brilliant efforts. Kudos to R Balki! Arundhuti Nag and the make-up artists were all very deserving. The beautiful song “Behti Hawa sa Thaa Woh...” from 3 Idiots won the Best Lyrics Award for Swanand Kirkire. Nimmi is right! Ananya Chatterjee was chosen the Best Actress for the Bengali film “Abahoman”. Director Rituparno Ghosh bagged the Best Direction award for this film.
I would love to watch Abahoman! I love Rituparno Ghosh’s movies. Is the DVD out yet? I heard the film was also adjudged Best Bengali Film and won the Best Editing too!:bowdown “Lahore” won the Indira Gandhi Award for the BEST DEBUT Film. Congrats to the director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan! Farooq Sheikh was adjudged the Best Supporting Actor for his role in this film. The Best Male Playback Singer title went to Rupam Islam for his “Kolkata” in the Bengali film Mahanagar. Nilanjana Sarkar was awarded the BEST Female Playback for another Bengali film “Houseful”. The producer and director of 3 Idiots, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raj Kumar Hirani would get the prestigious Swarna Kamal and Rs 2,00,000 each. Producer Reliance Big and director Shaji N Karun of Kutty Srank would get the esteemed Swarna Kamal and Rs 2,50,000 each. Amitabhji would get the prestigious Rajat Kamal and Rs 50,000. The awards were announced by chairpersons of each of the three juries. There were three separate juries for feature films, non-feature films and film writing. The Best Children’s Film award was shared by “Putaani Party” in Kannada and “Keshu” in Malayalam. Jeeva and Anba Karaus shared the Best Child Actor award.
Pihu, I do not think the DVD or VCD or Abohoman is out yet! I hope it will be out soon. I did not have the opportunity of watching it in the theatre. In the 57th National Awards, the Best Audiography award was shared by Resool Poorkutty (who had earlier won the Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire) for “Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja”, Anup Dev (re-recordist of the final missed track) for “3 Idiots” and Subash Sahoo (location sound) for the Vishak Bhardwaj film “Kaminey” Eminent film personality, Ramesh Sippy, was the chairperson of the jury on feature film. He said the system that was adopted for selection of movies for this year’s National Awards was a “two-tier” one.
Ramesh Sippy was effusive in his praise for Amitabh Bachhan. He recognized Amitabh’s brilliant efforts in portraying Auro’s character. The decision on the recipient of the BEST ACTOR award was absolutely unanimous. Bachhan had earlier won National Awards for Saat Hindustani (Best Newcomer), Agnipath (Best Actor) and Black (Best Actor). According to Sippy, almost every decision was unanimous and required little deliberation. The Telugu film Magadheera won National Awards for special effects and choreography. Renowned music director Ilayaraja bagged the award for the Best Background Score for “Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja”. Sreekar Prasad won the Best Editor award for Kaminey, Kutty Srank and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja.
