[JUSTIFY]Below are some of the basic tests every woman who are struggling to have a baby must do :

    1) Semen analysis for your husband ( to check his sperm count and motility).

    2) Blood tests for the following reproductive hormones – FSH ( follicle-stimulating hormone),LH ( luteinizing hormone),PRL ( prolactin) , AMH ( antiMullerian hormone) and TSH ( thyroid stimulating hormone) on Day 3 of your cycle, ( to check the quality of your eggs).

    3) HSG ( hysterosalpingogram, X-ray of the uterus and tubes,on Day 8 of your cycle ( to confirm
    Your fallopian tubes are open)

    4) The vaginal ultrasound scan on Day 10-11 should check for the following. A. ovarian volume b. antral follicle count c. uterus morphology d. endometrial thickness and texture

Why are these tests important before starting infertility treatment?

When a couple fail to conceive (usually after trying for one year on their own) they normally meet their gynaecologist. There are many gynaecologists who will not order a complete infertility workup (which are mentioned above). For example when a woman complains of lack of menstruation they immediately assume that the women has PCOD ( most women fail to ovulate because of PCOD) and give ovulation inducing drugs like clomid. There are woman who are fortunate enough to conceive on clomid. So you might now think that this approach is right and why should we undergo all other unnecessary tests. But imagine a situation in which the woman has tubal blockage as well as PCOD. The doctor diagnoses PCOD but fails to order HSG test assuming that the patient will be OK. She will ask the woman to take clomid for 6 cycles, then she will try other injectible ovulation inducing drugs, then she will try IUI - eventhough these medical interventions will help the PCOD woman to ovulate she cannot get pregnant because her tube is not functional or open. If all the basic infertility workup including HSG is performed in the first place, these kind of fruitless treatments could be prevented which saves so much time, money and physical, emotional pain for the patient. PCOD is not the only reason for irregular ovulation. There are women who undergo premature ovarian failure who present themselves to the physician with irregular ovulation. For them aggressive approaches like IVF is necessary inorder to find success- wasting time will cause conceiving impossible because a woman's fertility is very much dependent on her age! So it is very, very important for women to undergo all the basic infertility workup before going through infertilty treatment. This will save them lots of heart aches !

In Indian society, infertility is first thrusted upon women and many men are reluctant to undergo infertility tests. Infertility affects both women and men equally. So it is very, very important that a man undergoes semen analysis too before starting any treatment for women!

I hope this post helps some of you here !

This kind of posts need to be read before going to the doc. Thanks for posting it!

One suggestion though, it would be clearer if you could have posted it in a number format, for eg:

    1.
    2.

It will be easy to read and people could take it down as a checklist reference.

Please don't be offended by the suggestion. :)
