(Three or four decades ago). The Grand Trunk Express from Delhi arrived at the Central Station , Chennai. A Sardarji and his family got down from the train with their luggages. Four or five porters surrounded him . One Porter demanded thirty Rupees. Sardarji refused. Another two porters agreed for twenty Rupees (each ten Rupees ). Sardarji again refused . Except one Porter other porters disbursed. He ( this Porter ) was prepared to carry the luggages for a lower amount. He demanded only fifteen Rupees. "பாய்ஞ்சு ரூபா கொடுப்பா , வாசல்ல கொண்டு வந்து வெச்சுடறேன் ." Sardarji was very very happy. His face glowed . He gladly asked the Porter to take the luggages and helped him load the suitcases on his head and hands . The Sardarji family came out of the station with the Porter ,. placed all the luggages on the floor . Everything was going well and smooth upto this stage. When the Sardarji opened his purse and gave money to the Porter , there arose a big quarrel : a noisy , heated , angry dispute between them . The Porter said that the Sardarji had agreed for Rupees Fifteen . The Sardarji said that the Porter demanded only Five Rupees. The Porter said , " I demanded Fifteen Rupees and he very gladly accepted it (வாயெல்லாம் பல்லாக , பாய்ஞ்சு ரூபாவுக்கு அவரு ஒத்துக் கொண்டார்)". Note : Fifteen in Tamil : padhinaindhu. In local colloquial language POINJU (POINJ) . The Sardarji said , " He demanded only Five Rupees ". Note : Five in Hindi : PONCH Rupya( PONJ ?) . Finally , since the luggages were large and heavy , and no other Porter was ready to accept Fifteen Rupees the Sardarji paid him Fifteen Rupees . . ALL IS WELL THAT ENDS WELL .
Sir, Yes, words have different meaning in different languages. 'Panch' is five in Hindi. Thanks again for writing this funny story. Vaidehi
