    Making acquaintances at work.

One co-worker asked if we can go to nearby Indian restaurant for lunch sometime.

Since she is non-Desi, what type of dishes can I suggest?

Less spicy curries like butter chicken and naan.

Go to a place with a lunch buffet so they can sample a variety of dishes. Usually the creamy gravy dishes will be mild: butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, butter paneer, etc. She can try small samples of different foods and see what she likes best.

Unless you have been there many times and know what is good in that restaurant, and know the co-worker's preferences such as spice level (will a dish marked in menu with two chillies have smoke coming out of her ears), better to leave the task of suggesting dishes to the waiter.

You can ask the waiter which 2 gravy dishes and 2 dry dishes are popular. And gently help her choose one or two. So, you have helped but are not totally responsible for the choice. : )

OP is just making acquaintances. The coworker had asked (initiated) the OP about going to the indian restaurant for lunch. The coworker should be allowed to guide and direct the OP rather than the other way about.

In India, there are no Indian restaurants. We have Chettinad, Udupi, Hyderabadi, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Rajastani, Moghlai..etc..cuisines and restaurants; indians can easily explain this to justify why a Bengali person would be as good an expert as a Bulgarian in recommending anything at a Udupi restaurant.

The lunch-buffet idea of Malstrom is excellent. It is easier in the broad light of day to look at the dish, take a sampling, and then try a larger amount. None of this is possible, when the restaurant serves the lunch leftovers at dinner time, under dimmer lights, and bigger prices. At a buffet nobody needs to take the responsibility to direct any other person. Each person can do what they like. The desi can offer suggestions like mix-raita-with-spicy-curry to soften it down... and such.

That is awesome. Definitely the waiter has experience helping non-Desis with food choices.
