Hi Aruna, nice to know that you are going to Pondy which I have visited many a time before marriage and afte marriage too.

You need prior permission for Auroville especially for visiting the Matri Mandir.
You can get plenty of handicraft stuff there (recently my friend gifted me with a load of stuff like a kit for toran making, kit for card making which are very reasonably priced).

I have bought plenty of Ganeshas from there which you must have seen in my Ganesha collection. These are not terracota but made of clay and given coatings of red oxide to resemble a terracota which are so beautiful, prices to be bargained and washable (mine still looks like new despite the numerous washes I give them). These I picked from near the Manakula Vinayagar Temple and Aurobindo Ashram junction on roadside shops !!
