Dear Chitra, I happen to see your elaborate note on the sumangali prartanai. It is simply superb. It will be a real guide line for all of us . I am sure you would have taken a lot of trouble to compile it. Thanks a million. Chandra
Dear Chandra, Welcome to I L & to this forum. All the trouble I took to compile it, seems to be worth, when I get such feedbacks from you, after so many days since I posted it. Thankyou very much. Love, Chithra.
Hi Chitraji, Many thanks for your valuable insights and detailed account for the likes of me who value tradition very much, Sorry for the question again but is there anyone who knows about the Tirunelveli tradition as well. I am told that that the main difference is that the DIL sits as a pondugal and is given the pudavai kalam sari as opposed to the daughters. Is there anyone who could guide us on this please? Lakshmi
Dear chitvish mam, We really have to thank you for posting the pondugal niyamam, in inour family we've noted in a diary with our senior athai's consent of pondugal procedures. Pondugal has to be done as per the procedure even if little "madi" goes down it will have some bad effects. In our family, always for pondugal while inviting the pondugals of the function and also expired(late) sumangali pondugals my mother inlaw gets "arul" or some "late sumangali enters her body" and she says, "naan vanthuten, nan vanthuten" then our family senior ladies ask her "are you happy with the procedures", she'll say "yes, my blessings are there for everybody". Onething I understood is mangali pondugal has a great importance and significance in our hindu brahmin family, and in order to do well in life we need our "pithrukal's" blessings. Have you seen in any pondugal function somebody getting "arul"
Dear Lakshmi, The custom varies with individual families. In my daughter's family, the saree is given to DIL, though they belong to Tanjore side. Love, Chithra.
