Hi, I am planning to do some paruppu thengai for an auspicious event here in USA. I don't have the cone (koodu) to fill in the manoharam and to get the cone shape. I had earlier tried with tumblers.. thought the shape did not look good. Any body know any other substitutes or ideas for this? I thought about birthday hats (cones), but not sure if they will be good as it will be very hot. Suggestions wanted please. vidu
With the help of newspaper - ( 4-5 sheets ) nearly take the full newspaper and fold into half and make a cone. Should be a thick one. Then give a plastic sheet lining inside. Staple it and cellotape it nicely .as we put pressure while stuffing and it comes out. Next thing while stuffing keep this cone in a sack of rice of about 4-5 kg and then stuff , this way it stands still and have no curves. Might seems a long process but it is quite easy.Staying in Dubai - i also had done the same for my daughters first birthday. Lakshmi
stack 2 birthday hats together,.. (cover the outer layer of the hat with plastic sheet if you have risk of it leaking....layer with a butter paper tight. stick into the storage box containing rice and then pour the sweet. and leave it settles in you can later remove it use aluminium foil/golden foil to decorate...
Shanvy and Lakshmi, thank you very much for your tips.. i did thenguzhal paruppu thengai and it came out well.. used two birthday hats and poured the sweet into that. Placed the cones in a the rice bag and poured it. Thanks to both of you again, vidu
Thank you very much for the tip. We made Cashew nut paruppu thengai using the birthday cone idea. We used 2 cones and lined the inside with aluminium foil (this helped protect the paper cone from the heat also). We also bought a birthday cone that had a shiny gold (foil like) outside. It looks exactly like the paruppu thengai in India! Thanks a ton again! Lakshmi
