Desires are wants and needs of every human being. One should know that as we build up more and more desires we risk facing more and more distress and tension. Remember that a month old child has only one desire and that is food. As long as the child is with the mother and gets regular food there are no other desire. The child is at peace. But as we grow we interact with more and more of the world around us and with the growth of the body and mind our needs and wants increase. This leads to more and more of setbacks and turmoil. We go and buy expensive items to satisfy our need, little knowing that all such things will give us reason to be unhappy one time or the other. Don’t we all desire to eat so many different items as per the wish of the tongue on that particular day and time. Sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy or salty etc. But if we keep satisfying our tongue perennially it is bound to lead us to problems as we age. We fall in love and marry with full of hope for an eternal happy married life but there are enough potholes just round the corner. We desire and beget children and down the line rake up distress for one reason or the other over them to lose sleep. These are but a few examples, the truth is desires are seeds of agony. Nurture them now and suffer at leisure.

A friend of mine had the habit of window shopping and it had become such a craze with him that every weekend was spent this way. He always used to argue that it not only kept him engaged during weekends but also ensured he does not spent unwanted on weekends as he never did any purchase. But this desire to window shop is also a “want” or a “need “. He had it coming. Only that he realized it only after he was knee deep in. He got married in due course of time. It was an arranged marriage. The girl was from his native place. After 3-4 months he had his wife and also her sister and a brother from native place as guest in his house. His weekend endeavors continued. But now with his wife and her siblings. The first two weekends were okay but soon turned into nightmare as he could not control their desires to buy and soon he was broke enough and his savings all gone down the shop cash counters.

How then can one control desires. The truth is that as long as we are in this earth desires cannot be stopped but has to transform from being outward to inward. Only true wisdom, maturity and knowledge can give us the understanding. When one realizes that he is but a puppet in the hands of the almighty, he starts looking at himself, his fellow humans and other living beings as part of the lords entities in this wonderful place invented by him in which we are but his creation. With this understanding now there is an inner awakening and the desire to know more about the self and the lord arises. This is called inward desire. As one progresses in this path one can clearly perceive how the desires for worldly possessions recede and the need to advance more spiritually gathers momentum. If we continue along this path we gain inner peace with ourselves, and the light inside us glows more strongly. Soon we realize the exact position of ourselves in this earth and our relation to the other entities on earth including our close relations. This is when detachment starts. A person thus situated can see everything from a third person perspective and gathers lesser karma. This then is the beginning of the journey back home...

Hi Moonie, Thanks for reading and your support. Yes i agree, nobody wants us to act otherwise but tow the same line. But for ones own sake giving up many of the desires can bring inward peace and this is true.
