    Hi SLV...

Its nice to see you are still around and helping the concerned parents as usual. Thats very great of you. I have come back with my son speech problem..he is 3 years and 3 months now. I asked for your advice regarding my son's delayed speech about 5-6 months back, its been while. So I will tell you in brief about his earlier stage. By the age of 2 he was saying about 100 words aprox. and by 2 nd half year it improved to more than 100. He used to stay with me at home all the time and he is my only child. So not much exposure with other kids. But because of his speech concern and behaviour problem I decided to send him in preschool/daycare set up. He is going there almost 5 months now. He is in pre-school now. His behaviour has improved little bit (still hit kids but also love to be around the kids). His teacher always tell me he is very sweet and happy kid. But he doesn't talk much with other kids. As his speech wise progress he talks, say things in small sentences but only when he wants to be. His receptive language is good. He understand and follow the instructions. Nothing wrong with hearing. But the main problem is he can't Express himself. His expressive speech is 0%. If I ask him anything he is either all blank (no reply at all) or irrelivent words come out which doesn't make sense at all. I checked with Speech pathologist once, she had hard time to diagnosed him. But in the end she said..he might have moderate dylexia. My Insurance company refused to pay for the outpatient speech therapy. So I could not continue with the therapy. Now...I am very much concerned and worried all the time, how to make him express himself. When I ask him question...when, where, what....he repeats after me. Even though I reply him so he gets an idea thats how he supposed to tell me. But he is not getting the concept of question and answer. Please advice me...what should I do in this situtation. Thank you.

    Dear SLV,

I've read through Partha's problem. I am also facing similar problem. I am having a son who is 3 years and 7 months. He is having some delays in his speech. According to your advice, I've brought him to a speech therapist and after the first screening they have confirmed that his hearing and speech is not having any problem but is just a delay in talking. They have advised me to talk more to him. This could be a reason because my mother-in-law is the one who is taking care of him and the therapist says that she might not talk a lot to him. So in that case she ask me to talk a lot to him.

He repeats whatever we says and not answering the questions. For example, if we ask him what colour is this he will answer colour. Then when I answer the question as Red colour then he will repeat Red colour. Whenever he wants something for example if he is hungry he will come and point me the bottle filled with his biscuit. So, I will not straight away take the biscuits for him but will ask him to say what is it. After a few attempts then he will say it as biscuit. So the therapist also told me not to right away give him what he wants but to give him more choice for him to think. For example, give him a choice to choose between milk and juice or biscuit or cake.

The Therapist told me that I need to communicate more with him and the communication should be something that can make him think a lot and read some short and nice story books for him. Need some more advice from you in terms of the communication tips which I can use to communicate with him.

I really believe that your tips will be more useful and helpful to help my son to communicate well.

Even I did not post the thread on the speech theraphy but your suggestion to Partha really inspired me and motivated me to bring my son to a speeach therapist. By God's grace she told me that my son is not having any severe problem but is just a delay in talking. Therefore, please help me by giving me more suggestions on how I can enhance his speaking and thinking skills...

    Thanks once again.

My son was exactly the same. He knew words but was not expressive. A whole lot of gibberish would come out when he would talk. I took him for speech therapy for about 6 months. He also used to repeat whatever we would say. But now he replies to questions. I started talking a lot to him with the speech therapy. Reduced TV viewing and more playing with him. Also showed him a lot of picture books. Once he knew all the pictures I would ask question like "what is this?"...now he is 5 and is very curious and he will ask questions as well!!! Just talk and talk...give a commentary of what you are doing.
