    Poila Baisakh or Bengali New Year is celebrated with immenseexcitement and enthusiasm not only by the people residing in West Bengal butalso Bangladesh and of course the tribal people residing in the hilly regions.For them also, this is the time to bud adieu to the past year and welcome withall the happiness and joy, the New Year.



    On the Poila Boishakh day, people gather in the morning to have alook at the sunrise since this is considered to be sacred. Songs ushering theNew Year are performed by the singers. Bengalis can be seen in their traditionattire. While the young ladies wear saris, the boys put on Kurta Pyajama ordhotis. There is also an age-old tradition of starting the day by having abreakfast consisting of panta bhat (soaked rice) along with onion, greenchillies, and fried Hilsa fish.

    Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi are worshiped on this day by people, whereinthey pray for health, longevity and the well-being of the family members.Offering prayers to the clouds for water is yet another famous ritual thattakes place in the Bengali New Year. On this day, people are required to clearoff all the dues and loans. The Bengali New Year or Nabo Borsho is the day tobuy and prepare new account books by the Bengali businessmen. It is known as Haalkhata.
