We all know MSS, DKP, MLV, Semmangudi and other seniors after a certain age stopped giving stage performances because they know their limitations. But the scenario is different now.

It's disheartening to see some of the musicians perform badly on stage owing to their age and
when the artistes literally struggle even to maintain some semblance of shruthi.
When age takes its toll-it does for all at varying ages- it is time for the artist to withdraw gracefully from public performances.

    Though we may say
as long as the artist can perform flawlessly without the voice breaking down, he/she should perform whatever be the age..

Sometimes it is painful to the audience to watch/listen when age takes its toll-it does for all at varying ages- it is time for the artist to withdraw gracefully from public performances.
It is advisable they introspect continuously and if they are not able to do justice to the aesthetics and the essentials of a concert, they should graciously withdraw instead of singing to empty auditoriums.
Still we can find a few aged vocalist with lots of titles to their credits, still continue to perform .I feel they can run music schools, give lect.demo etc.

This might also apply to the instrumentalist but not to the extent of vocalist.

If the veterans could sing well, age should not be a problem.
Aging is common to everyone and at one point of time they should give-up public performance. They can follow the sports personalities.

Obviously if they are unable to sing well, then it is to their credit and listening public's relief that they should discontinue performing.

Dear madam, I agree with your views. Recently I saw a programme in TV, where the old lady singer has been asked to sing a song on the stage, as you said, her voice was not too good now and also she attempted to make the song even more worse by adding her own rhythms. sorry to say this..

Totally!!!! For example, singer Janaki... I have a lot of respect for her, but now when she does stage shows, her voice becomes squeaky and screechy in a high pitch.. There are a lot of young singers these days... So I believe some of them from the older generation should call it a day !!!! That way the fresh talent will get noticed and will get more opportunities...

    Dear Mathangi,

what you say is correct. Senior aritstes should retire. Its because of age, so many those days popular singers are not able to sing. they should simply refused to sing. So many talented young singers are there to sing. good topic.

I think it shows a lot of respect to performers who have given a lifetime of service to the arts to allow them to perform even if they are not young. Should they be made to feel like they are thrown out like a dead mouse? If you want to have someone retire then how about all these old leading men who are playing opposite young women the age of their daughters and granddaughters who in real life probably need intravenous viagra.

Definitely.. It pains to hear the glorious voices in their faded and screeched forms.. Wanting to take breath every now and then and losing the sheen.. Wish they stop singing in public once they realize that their voices dont co-operate as they used to..

    True Mathangi...
As the age their voice and capacity to hold on to a high pitch decreases...
    Worse still-
What about dancers who have crossed50 or worse still 60 continuing to perform on stage as they gasp for breath and have tyres round their waist and a hanging double chin...

    Pathetic...

They will be better off if they confine themselves to research and teaching...

Well, I wouldnt want to generalize all the actors into one category.... But there are a few actors who still entertain the audience the way they like to be entertained... I wouldnt support old actors, who still want to dance around with young girls to claim, that they can still do it... But there are a few quality actors, old, and give solid performances.... Similarly, there are some old singers, who sing beautifully - Lata Mangeshkar (Infact her voice sounds younger by the day..) MS Subulakshmi sang for a long time, and she had a golden voice... (She is a legend... ) Asha Bhonsle, sang the so-called sexy numbers in her 60s.... Why, SPB gave memorable performances a few years ago.... So some of their voices really do age gracefully tooo......... But its not for all.... And the same applies to every field.. There cannot be a lot of Tendulkars and Dravids playing awesome cricket at 38... So its about knowing your limitations and staying within them.... And when you understand its time for you to give the torch to someone, do it gracefully!! There is nothing left for legends like Janaki to prove to the world - they have done it all... She does not have to sit on the mantle and prove that she can squeak too... ! We dont want to hear that....

I can understand not wanting to listen to someone who gives a truly awful performance...I am not that illogical but someone who comes out for a song, well I think one can suffer through that. A three hour performance, well just don't go to it or turn it on.

As to actors, well there are plenty of fantastic older male stars who don't make a fool of themselves by acting across from young women and who give stellar performances (e.g. Om Puri, AB). They act with age appropriate actresses. There are others who keep being rolled out in romantic roles and somehow are fooling themselves that they are young (e.g. Salman Khan (yuck!)). Other roles are out there....why not take them instead or admit that you are aging?
