    @shravs3

Can you tell me when medication starts getting effective? My Dad is on his 8th dose (started Monday night, has to take 5 times a day), and he feels it is not working.

I am really scared. He is suffering so much already. Thanks!

Your dad probably got antivirals like acyclovir. He will have to complete the course in order for it to be effective. Did they prescribe anything else for the rash like steroid creams?

Yes, he got Acyclovir, 800 mg (5 times daily), for 7 days. Nothing else was prescribed.

The medication which he is supposed to take 5 times within 24 hours is called acyclovir

one tablet contains Eight hundred milligrams of acyclovir

so the patient will take Eight hundred milligrams acyclovir 5 times a day morning one afternoon and evening one and two in night

the minimum period should be 5 days so 5 into 5 is 25 tablets should be taken...

the earlier he starts this medication the chances of a complication called postherpetic Neuralgia will be less

postherpetic Neuralgia means severe burning pain along the course of the skin involved ....this lasts for about six months to 1 year

I repeat the earlier he takes the medication the chances of postherpetic Neuralgia will be very less.

It takes 5 days for it to actually work. Don’t worry . The medication shouldn’t be stopped at any cost . After 1 week my doctor reduced the dosage and tablets.
And also he had given some ointment to apply on the affected area.
Almost 50 tablets I had taken since I had got one near the eye too. So they had given some tablets for eye pain too!

Two ointment preparations are available :acyclovir skin ointment & acyclovir eye ointment.

The skin one can be purchased over the counter that is what is supposed to be applied here

I'm hoping he took it early enough.

Dad says he had sudden, sharp lower back pain on Friday, then he noticed these red, pus-filled bumps on Saturday.

On Sunday he showed them to me, and that is when I made Dr appointment for Monday.

I hope he treated it early enough.

    My goodness!

So how many days did you take the medication (high and reduced dosage).

Right now, my Dad's insomnia is being made worse because he has to wake up 12am, then 5am to take the medication.

How is ointment different from the tablet? Or is it an alternative?
