My sixteen year old son has been suffering from allergies for the past few years and this year particularly, he has been suffering severely for the past few months. He has missed a lot of school days, which has affected his grades; his normal life has been very dysfunctional. His allergies trigger around night time everyday (according to the doctor probably because that is when the immune system is at the lowest). Sometimes just before he goes to bed or sometimes a few hours after falling asleep. Once he has sneezed for the first time, the family gets prepared for an all nighter. He will sneeze all night till around 6:00 a.m. in the morning and fall asleep exhausted. There are some days he is able to go to school, some days he goes late and this particular year he has missed a lot of days in school. We feel sorry when he goes to school just after two or three hours of sleep since he is in a lot of physical pain due to incessant sneezing. The medications make him groggy and loopy so much so that though he has prepared for the test, he does not remember anything. My husband and I feel frustrated, hopeless, and helpless and we are ourselves have not had good night sleep for some months now. Since none of us have had a proper night of sleep we are all irritable the next day. He has gone through the whole gamut of Antihistamines, inhalers, steroid and now he is on antibiotic. He has seen his family doctor, few allergists and now he is seeing an ENT specialist, who is starting all his testing from the scratch. He is a very humorous, positive and social but for the past few months he has become despondent. He has become very moody. He does not like to talk about his allergies because he tells me no will understand.

    Anyone, anybody any suggestions?

    Dear.
First of all tell your son that a whole family of ours is there surviving with chronic allergy, migraine etc.
Am a chronic allergic to (you name it ,am opposite to that) everything around.Been on inhalers,antihisthamines...Tried all sorts of medications, starting from homeo to allopathy.Sorry to say,no remedy. Now made up my mind to LIVE with that.
As am allergic to all sort of tablets:bonk(skin allergy). So its the most unmanageable time for my ENT.My only choice is nasal drops.
Taking all PRECAUTIONS.(protecting myself from dusts, smokes)Prevention is better than cure.

My nephew is having the same symptoms like your son.then he do sneeze in the night as soon as he enter the bed room.I had found the culprit. It s the cotton pillows and bedspread. The minute dust particles aggravated his problem. So daily changing of pillows and B.spreads(before he enters into the room). This had minimized the matter to some extent. And as you said he lost his sleep.
He starts sneezing if he gets up early morning.:bonkAnother favourable reason to bunk his college.:).He had become lethargic. And in turn sluggish to stick to his daily routines. In short, this diabolic trouble shortened his activeness.
He is not allergic to cold items.

    Now he is in Australia.
To our surprise,he said no sneezing at all.I can't categorise the reason for this might be the unpolluted surrounding.

Few days back heard from our ILite friend that all of a sudden she shad asthma like allergy. It had lasts for long. She too was under medication. But as soon the tree in front of her house had fallen, her problem had vanished. She shared this with me since am always have the report of sneezing and head-ache.
In this case she was allergic to the pollens of the flowers.

I'm not threatening or giving abject self confidence, just summarizing my facts with you so as to go through the noxious elements in your son's case.First find out the root for his chronic factor(this will reduce 50% of the problem) then consult with the Doc.
Sure he will turn to norm and will be active as before.
Dear son don't loose your hopes.Loops are there for you to climp up.So cheer up.

    Hi

Pl go through this previous thread posted here

The suggestions are really useful, tips on how to develop a strong immunity and identifying the culprits in our home and the environment which may be triggering the allergic reaction.

Also I would suggest him taking fresh cardamoms whenever his bout of sneezing occurs. Let him just keep it in his mouth and chew it, taking its juice slowly. It is really helpful !

Try to avoid taking steroids as much as possible.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you Yashikushi, for the kind words.

Glad to know your nephew is doing better in Australia. About him being lethargic and sluggish, all that sneezing makes them very tired. When my son went to Chennai in 2006, he sneezed only one day . I do try my best to wash his pillow covers and sheets on alternate days. He is really high maintenance.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

My son is not a big fan of cardamoms, I will make him try it anyway. You never know that might work. At this point, I am willing to try anything. Thank you for the suggestion.

One thing that you can try is for your son to eat a local honey daily. Be sure it is raw honey....don't boil or micro it or the benefits are gone. It works like an allergy shot.

I have some moderate allergies to different plants when blooming and last year I was able to buy local (to my area) bee pollen from a local beekeeper. I have been taking a teaspoon of this daily for the past five + months and I can see a big difference in my immune system. This will be very difficult to find and also you should check if he can take it at all with your doctor. In addition, I do a neti pot daily in the morning. My trigger for all this was two bouts of bronchitis two years ago and a residual cough. The bee pollen is much stronger than the honey.

Vehera, we are a family of three with allergies each with different issues/manifestations. But whatever I have read or learnt from speaking with the paediatric allergist (for my almost 4 year old) indicates that the mucociliary movement clears allergens and infectious microorganisms from the respiratory system, but that it is affected when there are long-term allergies and flare ups. Inflammation also has a role in reducing ciliary movement.
I am not sure how much of yoga you have tried. Certain breathing exercises and mudras help strengthen the ciliary movement and prevent the allergen from entering the system and reduce inflammation. Steroids do that too.
A neti pot or saline irrigation will help reduce inflammation and return the ciliary motion for a healthier respiratory system. DS and I both are on saline irrigation and for me there is a marked improvement in respiratory symptoms. DS is also on montelukast also reduce incidences of allergic flare up. We have been able to prevent asthma flare ups and rhinitis flare ups (for DS) as yet this unseasonably wet August in Chennai.

    Hi,

I have severe allergy and non stop sneezing..
First I think you need to find out who is the culprit to trigger sneeze?
Avoid cold items and AC for some days and watch..
For me the culprit is cold breeze or wind or climate change..
I start rubbing my nose and get heavy sneezing...
I made it a point to not wake up untill the sun shines bright :rotfl
I have suffered much according to my knowledge only we can realise the condition of our body and then avoid allergic items
Have done all tests and everything is in vain..
I dont have asthma usually but when I catch cold I get wheezing
Now the situation is If I run fast and when I stop I feel dizzy and vomiting sensation..My BP level is normal..I read somewhere that it could be because of sinus..
    Any experience or views???

    Hi,
Ask your son to avoid cool items and food that will make the body cool.
Second thing practicing yoga will be of much helpful
Breathing exercise will be very helpful.
kapalapathi will also hold good. If possible find out a yoga master and ask him to do simple breathing exercises. Or you can watch you tube also
Pray the almighty that your son should get recovery and lead a normal life.
    with regards
    Ramavyasarajan
