Hi, Can someone please give a recipe for cooking plain dal(mudda pappu in telugu) using toor dal? Also, can anyone please explain in detail on how to pressure cook the toor dal in a stainless steel pressure cooker( how many whistles ,how many cups of water for a cup of toor dal). This is the first i am using a steel pressure cooker, so kindly explain how to cook without the dal sticking to the pan and getting burnt or undercooked. Thanks.
Hi Veena, Welcome to IL! You can cook mudda pappu very easily..Not a problem dear.. For better results , Wash the toor dal under running water.Add 2 cups of water for one cup of toor dal.Or you can use max 2.5 cups of water. Soak the dal for 1 hour or so by adding a pinch of turmeric and a spook of cooking oil. Pressure cook it until 3 whistles. If you have any doubts cook till 4 whistles. But 3 are enough for a normal cooker be it aluminium or steel. Add salt and mash it well.If you like put some tadka and enjoy! This way it won't get burnt ..
If you want to make it as side dish for roti you can fry sliced onions, tomatoes, green chillies and add cooked dal. Boil till the raw smell disappears. It tastes divine. Add some cooked mashed potatoes for a dramatic effect.
