Rain Songs The last few days of summer before the onset of rains are the worst. The heat and sweat are enough to kill anyone’s appetite and also interest in life. People in the hotter areas are the worst sufferers. The other day, I received a WhatsApp video that showed a group of volunteers in Ahmedabad sprinkling water on the scooter riders at the traffic signals to give them some relief from the scorching heat. People in north India suffer the worst because of the heat wave conditions. Anyway, monsoons have begun in India with a bang. Now what? Complaints about the bad road conditions, shoddy job by the municipality, flooding, death due to lightning, drowning in open manholes, electrocution and diseases are the main news items. Added to these are the real woes of our farmers. But we can’t let this beautiful season pass with only negative associations let us also talk about the beautiful things rains are associated with. I love rainy season the most. At first, it is the fresh smell of the earth-petrichor. Following this are the dark clouds, thunder, lightning, atmospheric changes, cool breeze and finally the rain. Don’t you love the freshness it brings to the atmosphere? Rains are also associated with fertility and the burst of greenery everywhere. The rainy season also heralds the beginning of a series of Hindu festivals and the wedding season i.e., after a gap of about a month in Aashad maas (June-July) Some of the other things traditionally associated with rains are the hot coffee or tea and fried snacks like pakoda, vada and samosa. Hmm…mouth watering snacks! Rains prevent unnecessary movement of people and it thus heralds family time. It also brings the romance out of the closets. Well, that’s what our film industry has taught us. It is now a mandatory emotion associated with rains. Since we can’t sit together and enjoy the hot and spicy snacks, at least let us enjoy some rain songs and celebrate this season. What do you say? The biggest challenge in compiling the rain songs was to procure videos with good visuals. Since rains and romance go hand in hand, I had to spend some time searching for ‘decently’ picturised songs! Some of the film songs (mostly regional) I checked out were very crude and vulgar. So I couldn’t think of posting them here. Here is my compilation. Please add your favourites to this list. It would be nice to get to know some decent regional and international songs also featuring rain. Let us enjoy! Eternal romance of Raj Kapor and Nargis Most realistic rain song picturization. Only Amitabh's suit is a misfit! How wonderfully they are enjoying the rain!
