    I am having REAL MAJOR ISSSUE going with my son...Please suggest me what to do...

    My son is in third grade now...ever since he joined school (pre-k) he was getting complaints from school that he is having difficulty in paying attention..At that age (both in prek and kinder) we thought he is just kids and being boy,it is normal...But as he is progressing in to higher grades he is developing that more and more...We checked with pediatrician and he sent some forms to school and diagnised as ADHD and suggested us to put him in 504 plan (which we were completely unaware of what it is at that point of time)..I googled thousands of site as to how to deal with that but none seem to work..I dont want to use any medication as he is too young..He has problem of following directions (not intentional but cant remember ),staying in his seat for longer time,getting in to others space etc...His voice is by nature loud..so even if he is having normal conversion or tries to express his opinion (which most of the time he is correct) it looks like he is picking up an argument...he is having real trouble socializing with his friends..His teachers themselves are saying that he is pure at heart and is not at all doing intentionally but it is creating trouble in class as he is constantly interrupting the class...i tried to explain him by being patienct,bribed him,been hard on him ..every possible thing under the roof...nothing seems to work..not understanding what to do...i cant see my child not being able to socialize...my heart goes for him...these days he himself realizing that he is not able to control his behaviour but he is helpless...because of that other kids and taking advantage of it and complaining about him even if he not doing wrong..and becuase he knows that teacher wont beleive him ,he is just taking the blame on him which is hurting me all the more...I honestly not understaing what to do...He is extreamly smart in acadamics...He is 3rd grader and can do 6th grade math...that smart he is...this is the BIG worry that is killing me...

    Ladies please help me out...any suggestions are welcome...i am planing to enrol him for taekwondo and boys scout...do you think will it help...also does anyone have any idea what this 504 plan is...will it effect his acadamic record showing as special ed child? from what i read in net and from what i understand from teacher it will only help him not to get more complaints (it seems teacher have to be more patient with kids in 504 compared to regular kids) but it is not going to solve the root problem...what do you all suggest..please ladies help me..i am desperate now..

    This is the first time ever in my 10 years since i got introduced to indusladies that i am posting the problem...i was silent reader all these years...sorry for the long post....

    thank you..

    A 504 plan is a behavioral support plan in place to help some kids with adhd and other issues have accommodations in the public school setting. It’s not an Indicisualized Education Plan which is more in depth and covers greater areas of intervention within the school environment.

    All of these things have to be discussed in a meeting with his special ed dept head and things to do to help him through this has to be documented in his 504 plan and has to be followed in school.
    There are ways to get him to sit and help him with his urge to move at the same time - a ball instead of a chair so he can feel the movement but stay in place.
    A fidget soft squeeze that he can hold and not disturb the class(not a fidget spinner). There are school district approved ones that he can have. If it’s mentioned in his 504 they have to accommodate it.
    A weighted vest for when he feels over whelmed.

    You need to see if you can get some form of therapy for him - like cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT). CBT isn’t counseling per say but can be done by a counselor trained on CBT. The CBT therapist can train you to help your son with these issues. The problem with children who have impulse control issues is that they probably are extremely aware of their deficits. Talking to him about it is only going to make his self esteem poor.
    Personal space is a concept that’s taught by some therapists using visual aids. Slowly he’ll give people space.
    Similarly intonation and sounding argumentative can be fixed with speech therapy help. School should have it. They probably won’t offer without a fight. Even if they do, they are only needed to provide for it if it hinders his education. IF not they will not offer that service. Private Speech therapists who are experienced in children with adhd should help. Occupational therapy helps with a lot of attention/focus/movement kind of issues. It’s also available in school but again it needs to be addressed in the 504. If not it’s a fight to get it. I’m not sure of the quality district’s therapists. Private therapists are available and most insurances will cover since you have an adhd diagnosis already.

    If I were you I would mention in the 504 the need for positive reinforcements. He already knows his issues and since he is hearing only negatives it might be hurting him. You have to be stern and tell him when his behavior is harming or hurting others. You should also praise and use positive words and praise and other reinforcers if required if he does well and sits and finishes task etc. It shouldn’t be a bribe - if you do this I’ll give you this. It should be a reward, since you sat well and did your HW, now you get to play with the legos.

    Along with therapy of some kind martial arts and Boy Scouts etc should help.

    His 504 is confidential and private. It won’t be shared with just about anyone. I have a friend whose child got accomodations via a 504 all through school and now is in college. She got into a private college even though her grades are not stellar. Having a 504 hasn’t disadvantaged her in any way. In fact, she even got accommodations to write her sat exam in a quite environment.

    Firstly thanks for sharing @madhulika78 . It's hard but we can get through this.
    My Dd has trouble following / executing instructions too. Yes, she doesn't remember instructions too. And her teacher said that same thing that she doesn't intend to disobey. She also doesn't sit down all the way. These are the similarities.
    Now, even I was reading up symptoms of ADHD the other day & one of main ones was "unable to focus or concentrate". Now my DD has a great concentration / focus when she wants to. Sometimes we have to shake her out of what she is doing.

    Also @madhulika78 how does your Ds know 6th grader math at 3rd grade, if he couldn't focus? Isn't it? To be able to grasp math concepts, wouldn't one have to focus enough esp talking about a kid who actually is ahead of others?

    Are we just diagnosing hyperactive kids as ADHD kids?

    Kids with ADHD can also have hyper focus. When they find an area of interest it’s hard for them to shake it off and do anything else. Moving from task to task and still maintaining focus is also worked on in therapy settings.
    Math seems to be a strength in many of the children, I have no idea why. Some of them have savant skills in one area but have trouble socially, behaviorally etc that can be detrimental in a school settings. It’s a spectrum and kids can fall all over the range. Usually docs look at the whole picture before an adhd dx and a 504 plan at least in my experience.

    Thanks @Laks09 . Now this sounds scary to me , because it’s possible Dd has hyper focus. I do see resistance in moving from activity to another & have heard the same from teacher too. I am going to keep observing, but thanks for those insights!

    @madhulika78 Good luck to you in your journey! Hope things will get better, I do think your Ds is mathematically gifted . Your post definitely helped me understand this better & am thankful to you for the same.

    i am not from the us so no clue on 504 other than what i have read about it.
    have a adhd spectrum son. i have had no help on that score other than getting an evaluation by a child counselor when we were abroad.

    i agree with @Laks09 on their hyper focus and few more points.

    and @madhulika78 acceptance and patience is what is must. and do not over do stressing on his habit or much. they are very sensitive and it could push them into their shell instead of blooming.

    work on his positive strengths and go with the flow. take help. take me time. dont pressurise him. looks like his logical,analytical part is greater than the rest make it focus. music the instrumental variety can reduce the restlessness to an extent. so does martial arts to bring that discipline with a patient teacher of course. my son did both. but due to health issues he had to stop

    i woukd have taken the option of 504 if it was available to me. why??
    the pressure and lot of other things will reduce giving him time to do what he wants. no stigma is worth putting my son through what he has been through his school life.

    by the way my son decided what he wanted to be at 4. today at 19 he is pursuing the same and also has set his mind on a specialisation. his faculty advisor was shocked about it when he told him in his first semester and now in his 4 th he says the same. just to clue on the focus that they have which is not common in all.
    he still hates writing exams but in indian system of education you have no choice. he scores a 90+% on maths the yr the whole nation cried foul on the paper set and the suicides. so i hear you.
    and he still talks so fast that you cannot understand what he is telling you unless you are familiar.
    if it helps he stays in hostel. manages on his own. i do not know what his subjects are or much. i trust my young man to do what he needs to do. no performance pressure from us at home. we do talk about a lot. we always look at a positive spin to things. when he ends up beating himself for certain things i just listen and tell him he will get there.
    ex. last evening he told me he could solve some advanced calculus easily but is disturbed that he is clueless on the application part of it.. sadly that was the way i trained him and it is hitting him hard and we had to discuss that as he digs deeper into the subject these calculations will definitely help.

    i am sharing it just to say hang in there and work with him not work on him. the moment you realise the difference in the above you are set.

    all the best

    No .the information is confidential.
    Go the 504 plan and accomadate all his needs. Its legal bindingand so teachers have to follow it. Ask for OT in school.
    My kid has an IEP in USA. My knowledge about 504 is limited.

    @Laks09:-
    Thank you so much for taking time to give me the detailed response...Yes ...now i am seriously thinking of taking him to some therepy...just not sure should i take him to psynologist or CBT or occupational ...which one do you suggest...We are just worried to take the advantage of 504 as it might show up as he is special ed child in his acadamic record ...i know that it is confidential but will it effect his record and will i have the choice to remove him from that when he is in middle or high school? teachers are saying that it that it will take some time to process everything and get in to it..My another worry now is ,how will he be able to sit for STAAR test this year..he finishes any assignment in less than 30min max..(part of it he knows and part of it he rushes because of lack of patience)and even if he is done,he is supposed to sit in the room for 3 hours without disturbing (which is HIGHLY IMPOSSIBLE for him)...i am really worried..if he creates any disturbance,will his test be cancelled,what action will be taken..any idea about that...

    @Naari:-
    yes...even my son is hyper focused some times...math and chess are the only two things in the world that interest him..he can do math and chess 24hours a day...he is more of logical person...so anything that has to deal with logic,he dwells into it ..that is the hyper focus...may be your daughter is also interested in something where in she is hyper focused...just pay attention to that and encourage her..but yes ,it drains out my energy to make him do something else that is part of acadamics like writing( the biggest thing that he hates ) and reading...

    @Shanvy:-

    Thank you soo much Shanvy for sharing your information..It is really helpful to get some help from someone who is in the same boat..If you dont; mind could you please tell me little more detail on how you dealt with him from school complaints...
    i get lot of complaints from school and i know that i cannot scold him because it is not intentional..his own teachers say he is physicaly incapable of controling himself..so there is no point in scolding him..these days he is feeling really bad when he gets a mark in his binder...how do i deal with him..
    yes he is logical minded..not at all interested in music..no music sense at all...so i cant try that for him..planing to enrol him for martial art..

    SAME with my son...he talks so fast that i myself being his mom sometimes find it hard to understand...

    He has no spatial awareness at all...ex...if there is water glass near him,there is no way that he WONT knock it off...he just dont observe that it is there...he doesnt have hand control..being 3rd grade, i have to tell you, he cannot tie his shoes ..still childish...he want LOTS and LOTS of hugs even now...my first grade daughter doesnt need that many...every small thing HAS TO LEAD TO AN ARGUMENT..he just cant have normal conversation...these things are worrying me really...he is too frank in his talk ,cannot hide a secret ,very plain at heart..sometimes this really worries me as how he will survive in this world when he grows up...

    Did your son become better as he grew up...can he socialize with other kids...how did you help him in that...i know i am not able to put forth my questions clearly as i have TONS of questions and i am myself not clear how to deal...your input is HIGHLY APPRECIATED shanvy..

    Thank you all ladies for you support..it gives great releif when someone out is there to understand your pain..
