prolonged consumption of Saffron

    Friends...as we know......most of the indian women do consume Kesar during pregnancy. And forget about it after the delivery.
    But is there any harm if its consumption is continued for years or more? Since it is known to improve the skin glow and too some extent the complexion also.

    Please share your knowledge on it

    Hi Dimple

    This is from my Biology knowledge

    Saffron is nothing but dried stigmas of flowers. It can be used as flavoring and coloring agent in food. Has some medicinal proprieties like can relieve PMS, and able to control retinal diseases.

    You can even consume it daily with a glass of milk in minimum quantity ( 2-3 ). Because it is more costlier you can substitute it with Badam to get same benefits.

    Soaked almonds are more beneficial.

    Prolonged usage causes change in appetite pattern and this is being commercialised as saffron extract for weight loss. Nausea and headaches and anxiety are common. You are not supposed to take more than 1ogms as it could causes symptoms like jaundice.

    last but important owing to the cost of saffron there is higher risk of adulteration.

    So the thumb rule anything that is in excess is not good. Moderation is the key.

    if you are using it on a regular basis do it with caution

    What I heard is, prolonged and extensive use of saffron will only cause jaundice in newborns, and it's been a common issue for many newborns now a days. As for the complexion part, practically speaking I am not a great fan of that.

    My uncles, aunts and some relatives who are of the darker side used saffron reasonably while they were carrying their kids. But none of their kids turn out to be with fair complexions. It is true that all those kids were looking fair, and in border-line for jaundice as they were born. But with time, they turned out to be their parents colour.

    I did not use saffron with both my kids. Both are of fair complexion, even though I am not that fair. So, it is purely genetics, and there is no scientific proofs that saffron change the skin complexion permanently.

    The kids with mild or severe symptoms of jaundice also have a fair (yellowish) skin complexion. But it is a disease.

    As far as I know it is taken only during pregnancy. I agree with the benefits of eating soaked almonds.

    Now talking about Almond....., i heard it makes us to put on weight when consumed daily?

    2- 4 almonds daily is good for health we never gain weight by consuming 2nos
