Now this is hardly a subject for a man to write about but I just couldn’t resist it. Sorry ladies.

I an angry and in such a situation I cannot help letting out my steam. MY QUESTION IS, ARE WE LIVING IN 21ST CENTURY OR MEDIEVAL AGES.

Gujarat tends tyo be in th news for all wrong reasons. Particularly the state seems to have some phobia about periods. No, not about periods of history but women’s monthly periods.

Before you bristle and yell ‘Idhu pombalainga samacharam or for the Tanuk challenged ‘ this is a ladies’ matter’ let me add I have been personally affected both positively and negatively by it. And so have been many other men, so I have a right to speak about it. So II have a reason to be angry

NOW TO TH NEWS. A Gujarat girls’ hostel asked the inmates to take off their underwear to prove that they are not menstruating. This followed a complaint that the girls were visiting religious shrines during periods.

Now the second news a godman has declared that women who cook during periods will be born as bitches , bitches in the sense female dogs . I have four dogs at home all of them female. Should ask them whether they cooked during periods in their previous births.

Humans are wonderful creatures. If they can’t find a scientific explanation for anything, they let their imagination run riot. Like they cooked up the Rahu Ketu story to explain eclipses, they came up with another imaginative yarn to explain periods and taboos connected with it.

The story goes like this; Indra was sruck with one of the worst sins, Brahnmahatya or killing of Brahmins after he bumped of Viswaroopa who was acting as guru of devas after Brihaspati gus preceptor walked out for some reason or other.

Dome god, Brahma OR Vishnu, I forgot who told the guy that he can offload his sin on somebody if they accept it voluntarily. Women took a share f it and this manifests itself every month as periods. PLEASE DON’T LAUGH OR BANG YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL. Lot of people, particularly women believe that as they are afflicted with the sin of killing a Brahmin during the periods, they cannot contaminate anything in the house with their touch. Hence no cooking. LOOKS like Brahmahatya is like radioactivity.

Now you understand the reason for my question; ARE WE LIVING IN 21ST CENTURY OR MIDDLE AGES.

Now I’ll tell you how I was affected by it. First I thought the impact was negative but in the long run it turned out to be positive. My mother you see was a serious believer in this rubbish. So no cooking for thee days of the period. I and my father were forced to rely on the southIndian ‘nesses;’ that dotted the Karol Bagh aea of Delhi where we lived then for food But these places were really in a mess and the food was godawful. This forced us to learn cooking.

While my father remained stuck to basic south Indian food, I graduated to North Indian and thanks to my stay in Italy to Italian. Thank you mama for your superstition.

All said and done it looks like we remain the same mentally since the puranic ages. In this age of information technology, we are, talking of period taboos. I can understand t the case of some godman. TThese guys gain by keeping us mired in dark ages but college principals and hosel wardens/ I despair about education. Has it failed to expand our minds and make us rational by inculcating scientific temper in us.,

    Dear Balajee,
Foolish fellows dont understand that human race will become extinct if the monthly cycle is not there.Food -we can manage somehow with swiggys, zomatoes etc.But to subject the poor girls to the strip test is atrocious to say the least.Double standards and hypocricy are best seen when women follow a different yardstick for the near and dear on the one hand and for others.

Gujarat College Officials Strip Search 68 Girls To Find Who's Menstruating, Say Rules Are Rules
In that ^^^ link to the story, the Bhuj College also has other rules:
The students also alleged that according to the hostel rule, students having periods will not stay inside the hostel room but in the basement area. They cannot socialize, or enter the kitchen or place of worship. They have to maintain separate belongings including utensils and cleanse them after the period is over. They also have to seat in the last benches in the classroom.
When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade:
Those prior-janma cooks, and rule-breakers, should be trained to stand outside temples, and in colleges, to weed out, and stop the contraband carriers from sacred spots. Bloodhounds have the best sniffers. However, ever mutts can sniff well enough. And to keep up a supply of sniffers for the Temple Sanitary Authority (TSA), women should be cooking every day of the month. Eventually we'd figure out exactly what sorts of rule-breaking can beget more bloodhounds in the next janma.

The principal of the college, the girls hostel rector, a peon and another woman have been arrested. Good some action is being taken. Such humiliation of any students cannot be excused.

The Shree Sahajanand Girls Institute (SSGI) a self-financed college having its own girls' hostel, is located in Bhuj town of Kutch district. The college is run by a trust of the Swaminarayan Temple and is affiliated to the Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kutch University. Source

The women's college or its hostel have these rules:
    • Women having their periods are barred from entering the temple and the kitchen and are not allowed to touch other students during their periods.
    • At meal times, they have to sit away from others, they have to clean their own dishes, and in the classroom, they are expected to sit on the last bench.
    • A register is maintained in the hostel where the women are expected to enter their names when they get their periods, which helps the authorities to identify them.
Is there any regulation of what rules colleges or private colleges can have for the students? Are private colleges run by religious associations allowed to have rules that discriminate against menstruating women? If yes, what can be a non-intrusive way for the management to enforce these rules that the students agree to follow as a condition of admission to the college?

In the case of this college, for the past two months, no student had entered her name in the register, the hostel official complained to the principal and the ridiculous and idiotic "check" happened.

IMO, the root of the problem is that the college/hostel can have such stupid rules and get away with it. If they receive any govt. benefits like lower taxes etc., cheap land when starting the college, they should not be allowed to have such arcane rules.

RIHANA, STUPID PEOPLE MAKE STUPID RULES. It is frightening but the field of education is full of such people. i should know . i have quite a few relatives who are teachers including a couple of PhDs in science subjects. SCIENCE or no science their hs are loaded with the antediluvian excreta that is at least a couple of millennia old They prefer the comfort of these age-old beliefs than fostering a spirit of inquiry. Such people confuse their beliefs with facts and try to ensure that others act according to them.

    ssshhhhh...

The information about taboo-breaking consequence in reincarnation was news to me. And it connected with the practice of various cultures using dogs/dog-like-imaginary-beasts as Temple Guards. Foo-dogs of the Chinese temples are quite exotic, and one may even buy a matched pair from Amazon.... for the back garden. I had seen the picture of one indian temple with their Jaya and Vijaya :smirkcat::

The orientals use foxes, and mythical animals of a lion-dog aspects.

Even in wealthy countries, there are remnants of a communal collusion to suppress information:
Period of change: the women fighting to break Hong Kong's menstruation taboo

And it was only recently, advertisers in US television thought it prudent to come right out and say what the devil they are selling. In the 70's there'd be frequent TV commercials to sell something that is a mysterious product in a pink box:

This whole affair is so totally insane, Balajee, it is really hard to even think anyone would go to such extents. Maybe all women should undergo hysterectomies - na rahegee baas, na bajegi basariya. Let the 'puritanical' society live happily ever after without a future generation.

Satchi when one person talks rubbish it is insanity. Collective insanity is called religion. Frankly your idea isn't bad. That way the bigots won't be able to wax stupid over reincarnation and karma.
