Parental Threats

Oh dear! Parents and their emotional atyaachaar on kids!

 

It is nothing but pure, unadulterated blackmail, Mistt, but it is a rich tradition in our country!

 

Oh dear! Poor kid, I can imagine the dread of going home! You know, I often wonder whether our parents never remembered their experiences with their own parents. Did they think it was right or was it a case of the harassed turns into a bullying mil? A bullied child turns into a bullying parent? My mom would often tell me stories about how strict her dad was and how all of them were so scared of him, they would never speak in front of him. I listened to this for a few years, but one day I told her that was no relationship to have with a parent. Why should anyone fear a parent so much? Well, some things will always remain a mystery.

 

The tragedy NTBS is that we were complete bhondoos when we were kids. We were so protected and bullied by the same persons that we did not know anything that happened beyond the walls of the house and school.

 

Balajee, now that is one new threat I have just heard!!! Medical and engineering colleges? Haven't we have had enough of those? Fortunately today there are so many opportunities for people to do what they love best and still earn money hand over fist, the kind of money even docs and engineers could not dream of ..... For that matter, did we not survive and reasonably well even if we did not become docs or engineers?

LOL Iravati. This reminds me of that poem "Godfrey Gordon Gustavas Gore" . Of course they did rig up a shutter with sail and oar.

For those of you who haven't heard this poem, we had this in the 4th standard. (I still remember the poem verbatim!) A classic poem about a threat (an unrealistic one of course with all the necessary drama to accompany the threat) which worked.

Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore —
No doubt you have heard the name before —
Was a boy who never would shut a door!

The wind might whistle, the wind might roar,
And teeth be aching and throats be sore,
But still he never would shut the door.

His father would beg, his mother implore,
"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,
We really do wish you would shut the door!"

Their hands they wrung, their hair they tore;
But Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore
Was deaf as the buoy out at the Nore.

When he walked forth the folks would roar,
"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,
Why don't you think to shut the door?"

They rigged up a Shutter with sail and oar,
And threatened to pack off Gustavus Gore
On a voyage of penance to Singapore.

But he begged for mercy and said, "No more!
Pray do not send me to Singapore
On a Shutter, and then I will shut the door!"

"You will?" said his parents; "then keep on shore!
But mind you do! For the plague is sore
Of a fellow that never will shut the door,

 

Well, wouldn't it be best if one could avoid them altogether, though certain kids (like little me) probably need to be kept on the straight and narrow - but with sensible threats! Otherwise yes, they could be totally counterproductive like my parents found out.

 

Hahaha! Talk of counterproductive threats!!! There should be a legal recourse to sue parents who don't keep up their promises errr.... threats.
