    Sweetytweety!

I think you have got arabic gum crystals. If I am correct, you have to soak them in distilled water for a couple of days and once they are dissolved, filter the thick fluid into a container and then use.Alternately you can buy the stationer's gum available in the market, for a starter.

    Hi Kaluputty

I have done a Tanjore painting, but was not told what is the ratio at which chalk powder is added to arabic gum. I wish to make one more painting on my own. It will be really helpful if you can tell how how much is the ratio for the same. And also where to get arabic gum crystals in Chennai.

    Thnx in advance

    dipa19,
It is a recipe which you have to adapt and use, just like our recipes for food....:)!Try 1:3 ratio for gum fluid to chalk powder, first and add a few drops of water if necessary for the consistency you need. For one thing, buying crystals and making gum might be laborious.Gurubaran in Mylapore is one place I am sure of ...where you can get it.But I would like you to try, the camlin gum available in plastic containers, from any stationers. That is really arabic gum, readymade.Good Luck!:idea

    Hello,
I've done my purchases for Tanjore paintings today, just the bare basics (yet to get stones). I ended up getting the gum Arabic crystals as well....is there a crystal to water ratio or what should be the consistency of the gum when dissolved??
Next time i'll try the camlin gum, but an stuck with crystals for now :-(.

    Any help will be appreciated.....

    Hi,
I don't know the quantity of the crystals you have bought, but the ratio of water depends upon the consistency you want.It is 1:2 for crys:water, for a thick one, and 1:2 1/2 for a slightly thinner fluid.Corresponding to this you can add water in drops to the chalk powder later. You can prepare the entire gum and store it in a plastic jar, tightly closed.Hope this helps.
