Ni Hao (Hello. How are you?)

    Hao (Good)

    Buhao (Bad)

    Hunhao (Very Good)

    Xie Xie (Thank you)

Chinese also say "Wei" a lot. That is their standard greeting upon answering the telephone. I assume it means "Yes" or "Hello" or something like that.

Another word they pepper their conversations with is "Niga". It performs the same function as "ummmm" in spoken English, just a filler word in every day conversation. It's literal meaning is "that" or "that one".

Of course, that word has an entirely different meaning in American English.

    :p

    Dàjiā hǎo(hello everyone),

Nice to see this thread. I have been living in Singapore over a decade now. I learnt mandarin to help my son in his academics but had to leave halfway through as my teacher called it quits. So glad to find this group where we can support each other to continue learning.

Xièxiè nǐ, péngyǒu ( thank you friend)
