Why celebrate? Because it's not 2018 anymore! :grinning:

Jokes aside... January is named after Janus and he was two-faced, one to look back into the past, other into the future. When Julian calendar was introduced, as an honor to Janus, Cesar established January 1st as the first day of the year to mark a new beginning after an end. Christianity later adopted some of the Roman faiths and festivals, including the New Year. Gregorian calendar succeeded, and Jan 1st became the standard New Year's Day officially.

I had say, the spread of Christianity, Colonisation, and Globalization in the latest centuries are why it became a universal celebration phenomenon.

For some of us who tend to forget or get too busy, New Year's Day is that gentle nudge (sometimes brutally) to wake us up from any coma, so we can pause, look back, reflect and review.

As you say, it might as well be any other day but I think 300+ days is really a long time to have made it through (alive!) and It's comforting to know we did good or reassure ourselves there is still time to do better. Merely phycology, I suppose, but it works. I don't mind a break and some celebrations before jogging on to the next year. :wink1:

Happy 2019. Have a good year.

:hello: & @GeetaKashyab Ok sister you all had listed probably all the reasons for how it is not worthwhile to celebrate both the eve and the next following day in the name of New year and how it is all commercialised.
    2. In point of fact , when a group of population makes merry another set must be benefiting.
    3. The money needs to be circulated to mke the poorest of poor to thrive.
For that matter all festivals all over the world - a set of poor people ultimately benefited .
    4. By keep telling good morning the whole office is turned into cheerful mood and so the world .It costs nothing but have potenti to earn the goodwill of others.
    5. So also the case of "HAPPY New year ".
With gadgets come into our life, sending good wish card practise stopped. Postal department and card printers envelope makers bear the brunt.
    6. When new clothes bought for celebrations, old ones given to down trodden so on and so forth.
    6. Thus in the final analysis one would find every celebration ultimately benefits directly or indirectly the downtrodden.
    This is my humble view.
    Regards.

    Love this:D

Good, you enjoy this phase; when in Rome do as Romans do! I am past this stage.
Time and again I am reminded of its futility. But this doesn't make me cynical or negative; everyone has their perspective and everyone is right. My son did go for the New Year party with our full support, rather we insisted that he should enjoy this phase of his life.:grinning: Well. one should do what one's heart dictates.

    Have a rocking New Year!

    Sir,
Thanks for this feedback and POV. I am not against anyone wanting to celebrate. A certain age segment has to do it as a part of self discovery and growing up. Some do it to be a part of their society and so on. Thus all POVs have their own rationale and all are valid.

I just presented my perspective which called for a little introspection and a little creative wish. It was not really a harsh or a critical view against celebrations.

Coming back to the commercial aspect of celebrations, I see only a miniscule of the money reaches the poor and the major portion goes to the liquor firms. Most poor people go to sleep before heralding the new year and their concerns are totally existential. Of course, many have their livelyhoods dependent on the excesses of our celebrations! For example, in the recent mega wedding of the Ambanis, many made their fortunes. In contrast, there was a low key wedding in the Wipro family and according to the WhatApp message, all gifts were for donation and Mrs Nadar is supposed to have gifted Rs 30 Cr! Whether it is a fact or fiction, both the families have their own rationale and we too have our own thoughts to decide our stand. In the end, everybody wins!

Why can't new clothes be donated to the poor?

Have a happy and healthy new year!

    Hi Geetha

Its just fun to track New Year from Melbourne to Big Apple. Its like one celebration the whole world looks forward to. I am not for a big party or celebrating with cheers but definitely love to send wishes to my near and dear ones and also would love to be remembered in receiving wishes. And this New Year’s eve got stuck at a place for few hours and finally it was a nice family time spent together on curbside. Don’t wonder too much. Just have fun on new year’s even when there is nothing new about it or resolutions are broken (they are meant to be). Happy New Year Geetha

@GeetaKashyap My New year started making Milk Halwa for my Grandson who has come here on a four week vacation.Usually rich food for lunch is the New year celebration for us.We all had a joint prayer ,had breakfast and went to my Favourite Uchishta Ganapathi temple did Archanas for all the members of our family.Geeta in our native, People celebrate the First day of the Tamil month THAI as a new year after harvesting and celebrate as Pongal day .This we can say as a Thanksgiving day for natural resources,to the Farmers and of course the bullocks helped in agriculture work. This is Followed in rural area even now. They dispose the old cloth and the wastes like worn out mats and bedspreads and even some mudpots. Every year they whitewash the house and gives a new look.I don't know when they started to celebrate Tamil month CHITHIRAI First day (April 14th) as new year and eager to know under which calendar year it falls. Hope Jayasala Mam can give the details.
we say in Tamil"PAZHAYANA KAZITHAL PUTHIYANA PUGUTHAL " is a New year that is Throw the old and bring the New .Let us Throw away thoughts like anger,Hatred ,Enemity and unwanted thoughts and Bring new healthy thoughts in our Life.

    Periamma,
Good to note that your New Year started on a traditional note. I appreciate your sagacious wishes.

Sankranti/Uttarayan celebrates the movement of sun towards north dispelling harsh winter and as you pointed out, it is a harvest festival. In rural areas, since Sankranti heralds the beginning of harvest season, it calls for a big celebration. While Ugadi (according to the Indian lunar calender)/Puthandu(according to the Indian solar calender) mainly mark the end of winter and the beginning of a new year. It is celebrated with the worship of the almanac and the other practices like consuming neem and jaggery(Ugadi), setting up a Gudi(Gudipadwa) etc. Panchanga shravana (listening to the forecast for the year according to the almanac) is an important traditional activity on this day.

Have a happy and healthy year ahead!

New Year's Eve serves one major purpose for us: Each year we get to test our endurance and answer the all-important question: Are we still young enough to party all night and watch the sunrise before going to bed?

This year's answer: I still got it! :number_one:

Happy New Year to you and yours, Geets!
