Narali Poornima marks the end of the monsoon season in Maharashtra. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shravan. People offer coconuts to the sea. The festival also commemorates the start of the new fishing season. So, fishermen appease the sea-god before sailing out over the violent sea. They pray for a safe fishing.

Singing and dancing are the main attractions of the festival. Sweet coconut rice is prepared for the day.

This festival is also called Shravani Purnima, Rakhi Purnima or Raksha Bandhan. The name “Narali Poornima” comes from “Naral” which means coconut and signifies the coconut that is offered to the sea during the festival.
