[FONT=TSCu_Comic]என் இயற்பெயர் ஸ்ரீதர். நான் ஆடிட்டராக இருக்கிறேன். அதற்கு ஸ்ரீதர் என்ற பெயரையும் என்னுடைய எழுத்துப்பணிக்கு வரலொட்டி ரெங்கசாமி என்ற பெயரையும் பயன்படுத்துகிறேன். வரலொட்டி என்பது என் கிராமம். மதுரையில் இருந்து சுமார் நாற்பது கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரத்தில் இருக்கிறது. விருதுநகர் மாவட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்தது. தந்தையின் பெயர் ரெங்கசாமி.[/FONT]

பிறந்தது, வளர்ந்தது வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருப்பது எல்லாமே மதுரைதான். பல ஊர்களைப் பார்த்திருந்தாலும் என்னுடைய இந்த 54 வருட வாழ்க்கையில் மதுரையைத் தவிர வேறு எந்த ஊரிலும் வசித்ததில்லை. [/FONT]

எத்தனைப் புத்தகம் எழுதியிருக்கிறீர்கள்?[/FONT]

தமிழில் 18 புத்தகங்கள். அது போக 300க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறுகதைகள், கட்டுரைகள். ஆங்கிலத்தில் இரண்டு புத்தகங்கள். ஒன்று A Love Story. அதில் ஒரு எழுத்தாளருக்கும் ஒரு தணிக்கையாளருக்கும் ஏற்பட்ட காதலைப் பற்றி எழுதியிருக்கிறேன்.

சமீபத்தில் வெளிவந்த புத்தகம் The Lovers Park. இந்தக் கதை மதுரையில் உள்ள சுற்றுச் சூழல் பூங்காவில் [/FONT][FONT=&quot]–[/FONT][FONT=TSCu_Comic] மதுரை மாநகராட்சி அலுவலகத்திற்குப் பக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் Eco Parkல் நடக்கிறது. அதில் நடைபயில்பவர்களையும் அங்கே வருபவர்களையும் பற்றிய கதை அது. அந்தப் பூங்காவிற்கு என் மனைவிதான் என்னை அழைத்துச் சென்று அறிமுகப்படுத்தினாள். மதுரையும் தமிழும். என்ன நினைக்கிறீர்கள்?[/FONT]

சங்கம் வைத்து தமிழ் வளர்த்த ஊர் மதுரை. இன்றும் மதுரைத் தமிழில் ஒரு இனிமை இருக்கத்தான் செய்கிறது. நான் இலக்கியத் தமிழைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லவில்லை. நாம் இயல்பாகப் பேசும் தமிழைச் சொல்கிறேன். அதில் கூட மதுரைத் தமிழுக்கும் கொஞ்சம் அதிகப்படி சுவை இருக்கத்தான் செய்கிறது. வடிவேலுவின் காமெடியைப் பல படங்களில் பார்த்துவிட்டோம். இன்னும் திகட்டவில்லையே. ஏன்? அதில் மதுரை நெடி தூக்கலாக இருப்பதால்தான். மதுரை என்றால் தமிழ். தமிழ் என்றால் மதுரைதான்.[/FONT]

நான் மதுரை அமெரிக்கன் கல்லூரி உயர்நிலைப்பள்ளியில் படித்தேன். திரு சுப. நடராசன் எனக்குத் தமிழ் மேல் ஆர்வத்தை உண்டாக்கிய முதல் தமிழாசிரியர். பின் பதினொராம் வகுப்பில் திரு. நரசிம்மன் அவர்கள் அந்த ஆர்வத்தை வளர்த்தார்கள். [/FONT]

அந்தக் காலத்தில் ப்ளஸ் டூ கிடையாது. 11ம் வகுப்பு முடிந்தவுடன் ஓராண்டு கல்லூரியில் பி.யூ.சி. (புகுமுக வகுப்பு) படிக்க வேண்டும். அப்போது எல்லாரும் அதிக மதிப்பெண்கள் வாங்க வேண்டும் என்று ஃப்ரெஞ்ச், சம்ஸ்க்ருதம், அராபிய மொழி என்று தேர்ந்தெடுத்து மதிப்பெண்களைக் குவித்தார்கள். நாங்கள் ஒரு சிலர் ‘எங்களுக்குத் தாய்மொழிதான் முக்கியம்’ என்று கோஷமிட்டு தமிழைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தோம்.

மதிப்பெண்கள் வாங்க முடியவில்லை என்பது உண்மைதான். என்றாலும் அந்த ஒரு ஆண்டு கூடுதலாகத் தமிழ் படித்தது பின்னால் உதவியாக இருந்தது. கல்லூரியில் திரு சாமுவேல் சுதானந்தா தமிழ்க் கவிதை வகுப்பு நடத்தினார்.[/FONT]

இப்போதுகூட நான் ஓய்வு பெற்ற மதுரைக் கல்லூரி பேராசிரியர் திரு அரங்கராஜனிடம் நாலாயிர திவ்விய பிரபந்தம் கற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். [/FONT]

ஒரு தாய்க்கு எல்லாக் குழந்தைகளும் ஒன்றுதான். தாயின் அன்பில் வேறுபாடு இல்லை. என்றாலும் எல்லாக் குழந்தைகளும் ஒரே மாதிரி பளபளப்பாக இருப்பதில்லையே! அந்த பளபளப்பில் வேறுபாடு இருக்கத்தானே செய்கிறது.[/FONT]

1998ம் ஆண்டும் ஆனந்த விகடனில் வந்த தழும்பு என்ற சிறுகதையை பின்னால் விரிவாக்கி ‘தங்கத்திலே ஒரு குறையிருந்தாலும்’ என்ற குறுநாவலாக எழுதினேன். அதுவே பின்னர் ஜெயா டிவியில் இதயம் தொட்ட கதையாக மலர்ந்தது. அதன் தயாரிப்பாளர் திரு விஸ்வாஸ் சுந்தர் அவர்கள் தொடர் முடிந்தவுடன் என்னிடம் சொன்னார் “இந்த வரிசையில் உங்கள் கதைதான் மிகவும் உருக்கமானது. ஜெயா டிவி Vice President இதைப் பார்த்துவிட்டுக் கண்ணீர் சிந்தினார்.” எனக்குப் பிடித்த கதை அதுதான்.[/FONT]

எழுத்தாளராகிய நீங்கள், தமிழை நேசிக்கும் நீங்கள் புத்தாண்டு செய்தியாக எதைச் சொல்ல விரும்புகிறீர்கள்?[/FONT]

பணம், பதவி, புகழ் குறித்த தேடல் நம்மை எல்லா நேரமும் ஆக்கிரமித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அந்தத் தேடலை விட வேண்டும் என்று நான் சொல்லவில்லை. அதைச் சிறிது காலம் தள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டு அன்பு செய்வது, பாசத்தைக் காட்டுவது, குடும்பத்துடன் அதிக நேரம் செலவழிப்பது, நண்பர்களுடன் அளவளாவுவது , அடுத்தவருக்கு உதவி செய்வது இதற்காகத் தொலைக்காட்சி பார்க்கும் நேரத்தைக் குறைத்துக் கொள்வது [/FONT][FONT=&quot]–[/FONT][FONT=TSCu_Comic] கொஞ்சம் முயன்று பாருங்களேன்.[/FONT]

Varalotti Rengasamy. Your name sounds a little different…

My given name is Sridhar. I am a chartered accountant. I use the name Sridhar for my CA profession and use Varalotti Rengasamy for my writing. Varalotti is the name of my native village – about forty kilometres from Madurai. It’s in Virudhunagar District. My father’s name is Rengasamy.

Are you a Maduraiite?

I was born, bred and brought up in Madurai. In all my fifty four years of life I have never lived anywhere else other than Madurai. I have travelled all around. But I have never lived outside Madurai

How many books have you written?

18 in Tamil. More than 300 short stories and articles. Two books in English. One, A Love Story, talks of the love between a brilliant chartered accountant and a hansome writer. Another, The Lovers Park, describes what’s happening in Eco Park, near the office of Madurai Corporation. It was my wife who introduced me to the Park.

Madurai and Tamil. What’s the connection?

It was in Madurai where the historic Tamil Sangams were established. These sangams played a crucial role in developing the language in all its facets. Call it a Madurai man’s bias – there’s a sweetness in the way Tamil is spoken in Madurai. I am not talking of the literary Tamil, but the spoken Tamil. We have seen the famous comedian Vadivelu thousands of times. And yet the dialogues have not become stale. Simply because there is a strong Madurai flavour to it. Tamil means Madurai. Madurai means Tamil.

Let’s hear about your Tamil Teachers on this Tamil New Years day.

My schooling was in American College High School. Shri SP. Natarajan made me interested in Tamil. When I was in 11th standard, Shri Narasimhan poured fuel into my desire to learn Tamil.
Those were the days before Plus Two. After schooling we had to undergo a one year Pre-University Course before choosig our degree course. Many of my friends opted for French, Sanskrit and Persian as their first language in PUC to score high marks. But I along with a group of my friends chose Tamil. We could not score well, no doubt. But that one year of studying Tamil made a difference in my life.
Professor Samuel Sudhanandha handled Tamil classes in PUC. After PUC I drifted away from Tamil, as I was arming myself with a professional qualification.
Even now at this age I am learning the Azhwar’s compositions from Dr. Arangarajan, a retired Tamil Professor.
SP.Natarajan, Narasimhan, Sudhanandha and Arangarajan – I’ll remember them so long as I shall live.

A difficult question. It’s like asking a mother, whch of your chldren you love the most. Which of your stories you like the most.

A mother’s love for all her children is the same. There is no difference in mother’s love. But there surely will be a difference in the way her children glow.

My short story Thazumbu (The Scar) appeared in Anandha Vikatan in 1998. I made that out into a short novel in 2008 under the name Thangathile Oru Kurai Irunthaalum (Even if the Gold is defective.. )

That was later made into a short serial in Jaya TV and was telecast for 4 days in succession. The Producer Viswaas Sundar called me after the telecast to say this story even made the Vice President of the TV Channel shed tears. That’s the story I like the most.

As a writer and a lover of Tamil language, what’s your Tamil new year’s message?

An endless search is now on for money, fame, power and posts. I don’t want the search to be ended. But why don’t we postpone it a bit and focus on showig love, helping others, spending more time with the family, socializing with friends instead of spending time before the TV?

And on this Tamil New Year day I pray not just Tamils but the entire human race be blessed with everything in life.
