This is a very old form of practice in Hinduism where you practice to be silent, no talking for a day or even sometimes more.
I have heard from my Parents say that their grand parents used to practice mouna vratham (ritual of silence) every month or so.

How practical is it nowadays?Does anybody here practice it?

1.How hard is it to do that and how often do you do it?

2.How does your family react/cooperate to it? With kids can we do it now. But my great grand parents used to do it with exactly 10 kids around them and no help. They would take turns.....how sweet?
:hatsoff to the understanding between couples. Both lived to see their 90s.

3.How do your friends react to this...do they even know?

4.What happens if you get a phone call/door bell ring....do you take it then and later resume your vratham or dont answer.

5.Have you had any occasions where you were required to break it?

6.How beneficial is it to health?

Too many questions. I better stop now.Excuse me!

    Hi Adara,

It is very hard to keep up mouna vratam at home.
Long time back I took mouna vratam for a week at Aliyar
(near Pollachi,TN) in Vethathiri Maharishi`s ashram.
During mouna vratam there was no tv,radio or newspapers.
If the participants want to communicate they write in a notebook
and pass to the other person. I enjoyed the time of mounam.
During that time when you see your face in a mirror it was glowing.
I wish every year I participate in mounam.

Really interesting to know you actually did it. Thanks for responding.
How do you start your set day for mouna vratham?
Do you have to start with some puja or so?

    Thanks Again

    Hi,
We start with meditation in the morning. They teach simplified
kundalini yoga. If you are interested here is the web address
www.vethathiri.org Actually the food intake will be less during mounam because we are not exhausting our energy through speech and talk.

Other things and kids take priority in life , I completely forgot about mouna vratam which is good for the soul. This old thread kindled many thoughts and memories. I will try to plan and set up the time to do mounam

Don`t worry about breaking the mounam. We are not saints to do it for prolonged time. Even 2 hours mounam is also worth it. But that time we should take light food and focus inwards like meditation and any spiritual things. Mainly no cell phone,tv or internet. This is my humble suggestions.
