    Dear Agatha,

Not everyone who write about mindfulness and synchronicity are well-versed in philosophy and spiritualism. It might be a cry for help from others to demystify their confusions. I definitely belong to that category. "Kattradu Kaimaan Alavu, Kallaladhu Ulagalavu" (What we know is fistful when what we need to learn is as big as the Universe). I am only scratching the surface of the knowledge to see whether anything sticks in my limited brain.

    Dear Smt. Srinivasan:

The concept of synchronicity was explained by Carl Jung , a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst out of his own experience with his patients. He also delved into other subjects such as anthropology, archeology, literature, philosophy and religious studies.

My writing has no proof of concept in a laboratory setting but derived out of ancient wisdom. I feel the Universal Consciousness and Individual Consciousness are always connected and Individual Consciousness has an unlimited urge to be united with the Universal Consciousness. The ancient wisdom suggests that one needs to become thoughtless. Assuming the Mind is a cauldron of thoughts, one should become Mindless. However, the western civilization talks about the need for Mindfulness as a mean to reach awareness and eliminate rumination.

When an Individual Consciousness reaches the stage where it remains constantly aware, the Sankalpa it makes for the common good of all beings will be fulfilled and this I call as synchronicity. Everything will fall in place to make it happen.

    Dear Vani,

This is a wonderful suggestion that psychologists have given everyone. Even Mindfulness is a tool to reach awareness as that is our ultimate aim. We need to raise above the mind to see the pure and unsullied consciousness which is called, "Over Mind". According to the scriptures, the mind and its vagaries must end for us to have dharshan of Consciousness. It is like lighting the lamp (building the knowledge about ultimate reality) or burning camphor to see God in the Temple. We are like a beautiful marble statue buried under the earth in the encryption for many lives and when an archaeologist bring it out and clean it, we are able to see the beauty of that statue.

When a child is born in olden days, all the ladies sitting around the baby used to describe that the eyes are like her dad, mouth is like her grandpa and nose is like her grandma and the fingers are long like her mother's, etc. We used to feel proud about it. If we truly believe in the scriptures that we are all spiritual beings having human experience and came to this world only to eliminate our encryption, isn't it fair to assume that we will have an urge to clean ourselves up to be as pure as our Ultimate Reality? Our selfish desires, body-consciousness, attachments are the play of the mind using its freewill residing in a world of its own inside the Universal Consciousness.

If our Chit is filled with Ultimate Reality i.e. Truth and what we will experience is only Bliss and that is why we call it Sat-Chit-Ananda.

    Dear Sri Thyagarajan:

Right faith creates Sankalpa and light the lamp of knowledge inside of us to seek the ultimate truth that we are separated from for several lives. Every life definitely has an urge to be part of the Universal Consciousness and that can't be removed by any effort as we have all come from the same source.

    Dear Viswa,
A beautiful narration, as ever, about'mindfulness' and 'synchronicity'.When theoretically analysed everything seems ok.
We have altogether different experiences in our own family.
I am not talking about Psycho analysts or research scholars who are experts in paranormal studies.
I am talking about normal women, I say women, who had studied hardly upto standard 3,in their normal madisar attire specific to Iyer Community.
The lady was in her 50s. She had given her daughter in marriage to her brother's son and being a widow she was living with her daughter.
I do not know, how, she acquired some psychic powers , because of which many things she uttered came true.
Initially they were happy. Things turned otherwise when her daughter was about to attain motherhood. When her daughter was going into labour she loudly pronounced that the grandchild would be a boy ,but he would be deaf and dumb .Though the child's father distinctly heard what she said, he didn't open the month. But the child was deaf and dumb.
The husband became very wild and never allowed her inside. The second and third sons were born, the lady was not there. The kids were normal.

When the girl was pregnant with the 4 th child, she felt her mother's absence and said that it was a sheer coincidence that her eldest son was deaf and dumb. The fourth and fifth were daughters, the grandma didn't utter anything outwardly, but we didn't know what she muttered within herself. Both the daughters again were deaf and dumb.
This time she was driven out of the village.
The sixth child was of my age, was very beautiful and very talkative. Accidentally the girl, 7, met her grandmother on the road. She stood in front of the lady and said, 'I can talk very well. What can you do?".The lady retorted'Next month, your head will crack out of injury caused by a bronze vessel and you will lose your life immediately. This will not happen in your house".
The young girl could not understand what she said but the the women walking along the road , heard and informed the parents.
It was the year 1949, Summer holidays.
As my sister was married to the girl's father's younger brother, my sister along with her children brought this girl also to our house. There were so many kids.We were playing endlessly hours together. After three days, my Amma was giving curd rice to some ten
children( joint family). We were sitting round. The girl was sitting by my side.Suddenly my mother heard some cracking sound. The wooden plank on which the old big bronze pots were kept got disconnected from the wall because of rusting of nail, My mother rushed and prevented the large wooden plank from falling and warned all the children to move away. Before this girl moved out, a big heavy bronze pot rolled and fell on her head. The pot as well as the head cracked. That was all.
Can we treat this incident as a just coincidence? At least the deaf and dumb nature may be connected to consanguine marriage. How can this be accounted for?
This incident created lot of panic. My sister became pregnant. She had some notion that her child also would become deaf and dumb.Every day her anxiety grew and she became depressed, sometimes aloof, sometimes shouted. My sister's husband brought some 'poosaari' and he began to hit her in the process of driving the ghost. My mother sent the man out, day in day out spoke very affectionately and encouragingly and brought her back to normalcy .In those days, no psychiatric consultant was available. My amma had a sigh of relief only after the child became 7 months and started uttering 'thatha' and some two syllable sounds.
My sister had a really tuff life in the joint family, with her 6 children and her sister-in-law's 5 kids, three dumb and two normal.

I have seen three women like this , looking normal, doing all house hold work. Many of their curses turned out to be true. The local Headmaster was cursed of death due to throat injury;he died of throat cancer.Another young girl who was taking bath in Kaveri
was told that she would remain there for ever. The girl refused to come out.She became so heavy that she could not be dragged. At last a few strong farmers were called for help. She was forcefully brought home.
As such my parents never believed in such things. But the young girl's death in our kitchen still stands before my eyes.
Notwith standing scientific advancements, many Universities have diploma and degree courses in paranormal studies and it has taken a new Avatar of 'science' and considered a part of 'neuro studies'.
We have studied about the sooth sayers of Rome, curses by maharishis and mythological stories of demons incurring the wrath of Gods and sages and increasing atrocities on account of boons granted by Trinity.
Still on oneside there is much talk of annihilating 'superstitions' and on the otherhand, some neuro specialists talk more of ESP( Extra sensory perception' and Yoga gurus for their part talk about unique achievements by practising yoga, talking about some strange unbelievable attainments.
Ignorance seems to be a bliss.
Do your work without intending harm. There is no need of special attainments.
    What does Shri Viswa say?

I hope I am. I am not even sure I am capable of achieving any spiritual disciplines leave alone special attainments.

I am not sure if I were in the shoes of grandma whether I would have said such things that would hurt the parents. If their children were bound to be born with special needs, it was the parents responsibility to address them and nothing could be accomplished by pronouncing a new born child to be deaf and dumb. No way, it will be helpful to the parents. I really don't know much about ESP or Psyco Analysis.

I assume I know only one thing. How to study about right living and I keep doing it until I get it. If Mindfulness will deliver good results, I am all ears to listen and experience it. I am happy if I am better today than yesterday. Until I come to the conclusion that I don't get it, I will keep inquiring.

Thanks for the write up Viswa. This one needed time to be chewed and digested! I understand mindfulness in the most rudimentary sense and synchronicity not at all. I'm guilty of having a shallow awareness of the practice and its origins, though I am working to rectify that.

The Pali word Vipassana literally means inner vision. In the West we've come to know it as mindfulness, the state of being aware of the true nature of reality sans preconceptions and judgements. S. N. Goenka the founder of the modern Vipassana movement describes it thusly,

Vipassana is not merely concentration. Vipassana is observation of the truth within, from moment to moment. You develp your faculty of awareness, your mindfulness. Things keep changing, but you remain aware - this is Vipassana.

Apps like Headspace present a stripped down, easy to practice form of Vipassana combined with elements of calming meditations like Samatha in Buddhism. To truly immerse yourself into the practice, you would have to attend one of the 10-day training camps run by the Goenka centers -- one of my future goals. I will write more about these camps on the meditation thread.
