One of my Health tip about mango (sorry its about Mango leaves) - boil 5 - 6 tender mango leaves in a big glass of water for about 10 mints and leave it over night. First thing in the morning, drink the water discarding the leaves, twice a day. it is one of the best medicine for diabetic patients to keep their sugar level under control.

Interesting topic. Mouthwatering.... I am sharing some of the facts that i know about the King of Fruits.

Mango is not only the king of fruits but also the National Fruit of our country. It's an oldest fruit which has its place in hindu mythological story about Lord ganesha and Lord karthik (murugan) contesting with each other for winning the fruit and raced around the world. It stands first among the trio (mukkani in Tamil) viz. Mango, Jack fruit and Banana.

    Known Varities of Mangoes :
    · The famous Happus or Ratnagiri mango which is also exported to various countries is famous for its flavour, colour and sweetness.
    · Then the Badami which is a close relative of Banganapally mango
    · Neelam
    · Totapuri (kilimooku mangai)
    · Chakkara kutti (a very sweet mango)
    · Salem 'Malgoa'
    · Kesar

    Seclecting a Mango :
    1. Skin should not have wrinkles
    2. When pressed should yeild to the pressure (too stiff = raw, too loose = over ripen)
    3. black spots means it is fully ripen

    Products :

    1. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, people used to extract pulp from fully ripened mangoes called 'Aamras'
    2. Jam, Pickles and Juices are made from raw & ripen mango, through out the country
    3. In South, Mango leaves are considered auspicious and is hung outside the houses and also used in various hindu rituals.
    4. Mango seeds are used in Indian medicine for curing certain diseases
    5. Can make pachadi, puliserry (kerala dish)..

    Nutritional benefit :
It is rich in Vitamin 'A', also has vitamin c, calcium, phosphorous, sodium. Helps in immunisation. It is believed that it raises body heat. So to be taken in limited quantities.

Its about a interesting game that my friend mentioned to me recently.

Has anyone played goti(marbles) or seen anyone playing them? Well one of the basic game goes such -
an equal number of marbels are collected from all the children playing, one player holds all marbles in hand and throwns them on the ground. Now, this person has another marble at hand and standing at a pre-defined distance, has to throw the marble at hand to the other ones on the ground to hit them. If they hit a marble, the marble is theirs and can take it home! If you miss, so ends your turn and goes the turn goes to the next player.

My friend says, as kids in summer vacation when they used to visit their grand-parents home (which was by then full of cousins and other neighbourhood kids:crazy), they used to eat as many mangoes as possible just so they can get the seeds of mangoes :bang(well ofcourse, they do face the consequenses later! :bonk) and wash them and keep them in the sun to dry - while continuing to keep a watch over it, so that no birds or squirrels or even kids get near it. :bonkOnce dried, then they run off to the fields and play this game I mentioned above - only to replace the marbles by mango seeds!

With this, I just could visualise the kind of anticipation a kid has to get a hold on the mango-seed!

P.S. : Laxmi, Are multiple entries allowed? I know I have many facts and stories to share!!

mango was called njaanappazham in hindu mythology. mango is seasonal and all states are having their own varieties in india.

mango skin can be dried and kept and we can add this to bason and little rose water to apply as face pack. it tightens as well as bleach the skin.

mango creates heat in the body so should be taken after keeping under water for an hour. mango seed is having madicinal values so should be dried and kept. it should be taken out of the shell in need to consume. good for stomach pain and stomach upset. one special type of gravy with this with pepper, tamarind and salt is good for digestion.

The smell of the mango is main to identify its sweetness. the skin should be clean and little soft.

raw mangoes are used for pickles, sweet pickles, chutneys, dried with salt for making gravy, mango powder for curries etc. the mango fruit should be used for jam, juices, salads, mango pappads, mango ketch up, gheers, plain mango as desert, can be aded as a flavour in ice creams, cakes and puddings. In kerala mango is used for making curries with coconut paste.
mango chiklies are famous in north india.

neelam, salem, kappai, Kilimookkan, priyur, chandrahaaram, malgova, banganapalli, ratnagiri are some of the known varieties in south india.

Cutting mangoes is an art. we should start from the eye of the mango and it should be a running stroke without taking hand moving around the eye downwards, end with the bottom point. the skin should come like a
    spring.

Mango is a seasonal fruit so should be enjoyed the maximum when it is available and preserve for the non availability time. I think almost all love mangoes.

Mangoes are great in taste and loved by everyone. It has lot of vitamin A and good for eyes.So who have weak eyes they should take 1 mango a day.
It has been told by our elders that mangoes should not be eaten
without soaking in water for some hours as mangoes are hot if eaten without soaking in water, the result is boils on our faces or underarms [which i have experienced].
Mangoes comes in summers and it has medicinal property for summers.RAW MANGO PANNA DRINK is very good to drink in summers to avoid effects of sun [in hindi loo].
it is very easy to prepare.
Boil raw mangoes, take out pulp, add sugar, chilled water and black salt, roasted jeera pwd and fresh mint leaves.
Very good if taken before going out in sun.
PEOPLE WHO ARE DIETING SHOULD TAKE ONLY ONE MANGO A DAY
AS IT HAS LOT OF CALORIES.IT HAS 70 CALORIES PER 1OO GRAMS.

The king of fruits has always won our hearts. Each year, hynders of us wait to see the mango blooms turn into our beloved yellow fruit. For city dwellers, they keep waiting to see a mango stall to come up. All the raw mango topped with chilly powder and salt, aamras, mango milkshake, mango ice-creamtopped with mango pieces, sakharamba, kairiche panneh, mango cutney that follows all seem like a dream come true.

But, we have never given a though if these mangoes are artificially riped for us.

This is the method used to artifically ripen mangoes. The immature mangoes are packaged in boxes along with calcium carbide. This calcium carbide when exposed to air/moisture gets converted to ethanol. ethylene is similar in constituent to an enzyme that mangoes produce within themself to ripen the fruit. Now, that the mango is plucked, this ethylene acts like an agent to ripen mangoes. But, lately calcium carbide and ethylene have been named as hazardous to health. I even read that calcium cardide/ethylene is carcinogenic (I am not sure about this). But, with all this atleast people are becoming aware of the facts.

The best way to choose mangoes that are NOT artificailly riped is to see if the mango is starting to ripe from bottom towards the head. If this is the case, they are naturally riped otherwise not.

    hi

The name 'mango' is derived from the Tamil word 'mangkay' or 'man-gay'. In the Hindu culture hanging fresh mango leaves outside the front door during Pongal and Deepavali is considered a blessing to the house.
    :rotfl
