An old story with an upgrade...

There was once a washer man who had a donkey and a dog.

One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house, the washer man was fast asleep but the donkey and the dog were awake.

The dog decided not to bark since the master did not take good care of him and wanted to teach him a lesson.

The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself. The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly.

Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason.

Moral of the story “One must not engage in duties other than his own"

Now take a new look at the same story…

The washer man was a well-educated man from a premier management institute.

He had the fundas of looking at the bigger picture and thinking out of the box. He was convinced that there must be some reason for the donkey to bray in the night.

He walked outside a little and did some fact finding, applied a bottom up approach, figured out from the ground realities that there was a thief who broke in and the donkey only wanted to alert him about it.

Looking at the donkey's extra initiative and going beyond the call of the duty, he rewarded him with lot of hay and other perks and became his favorite pet.

The dog's life didn't change much, except that now the donkey was more motivated in doing the dogs duties as well. In the annual appraisal the dog managed a " meets requirement" Soon the dog realized that the donkey is taking care of his duties and he can enjoy his life sleeping and lazing around.

The donkey was rated as "star performer". The donkey had to live up to his already high performance standards. Soon he was over burdened with work and always under pressure and now is looking for a job rotation…

Moral of the story remains same “One must not engage in duties other than his own"

    @Afresh,

Good one but I disagree with the last one and half paragraphs. They turned a motivational story into a non-motivational one.:weary:

We have all been there; we too have felt demotivated and burnt out many a times. Using some smartness and learning about the work-life balance was the need of the hour! Any wonder, 'sincere but not smart' workers get treated like donkeys!

Same story with further updates as per latest syllabus :)

    A LESSON IN CORPORATE MANAGEMENT.

    ___

A rich man had a dog and a donkey.

The dog guarded the house ( Security Dept)

The donkey carried loads ( Logistics department.)
It worked long hours with full dedication for the master.

One night a thief entered the house.

The poor donkey who was not asleep, due to joint pains, saw the thief, informed the sleepy dog who didn't bark as he didn't care.

The conscientious & dedicated donkey started to bray to alert the Master from his deep sleep.

The Master woke, noticed it was midnight, & grew irritated by the donkey's loud braying.

He ran out with a big stick - and walloped the donkey.

The Donkey was shocked by the Master's action. While the dog saw what was going on laughed and went back to sleep...!!

The normal story ends here with the moral ' It is always better to mind your own business.'

    ................................

In the real world, of corporate management business, the story continues... with a twist.

    _______

Before the master fell asleep, he thought about the situation ..and wondered what had happened - & why.

His Donkey usually didn't bray at that part of the night and looked very hurt.

Also .. the dog looked sheepish, almost as if ashamed !!!

He looked outside and saw the thief running out of the gate and realized what must have happened.

The Master then felt sorry for the donkey.. gave the donkey a pat on the shoulder - and gave the dog an angry glare !!

Next morning both the donkey and the dog got letters. Which said.....

    - the Dog had been suspended from night duty !

The Donkey got additional responsibility of Security at night.

    ................................

Again - the story could stop here with the Moral

' If you are dedicated to your job.. you can rise in responsibility to any level ' !!.

    .....................

    But our story continues..

    With an additional twist....................

The dog didn’t feel any jealously even after getting a big demotion.

The donkey now handled his own work in addition to the dog's responsibility !

One month passed and in the mid-year appraisal the dog got 5 out of 10 and the donkey got 9 out of 10.

To meet his master's expectations, the donkey had to do a double shift while the dog enjoyed his life with no regrets.

Within 6 months the overworked donkey resigned.

The HR Dept.. cut the donkey's settlement - for not giving adequate notice - and started to look out for a replacement.

The designated post was advertised as a "Donkey-cum-Dog...opening !"

Due to difficulty in finding a Donkey-cum-Dog as a replacement - the suspended Dog was hired back to the job -with full pay including the suspension period pay.

Moral - Do your job. Don’t get involved in someone else's work ! Don’t cover for others. Look after yourself.

    ................................

    THIS IS ONLY A STORY.

ANY RESEMBLANCE TO LIVING DOGS or DONKEYS IS PURELY COINCIDENTAL

    Hi @GeetaKashyap ,
So sorry to have added to the real moral story !
But such is life , the kalyug perspective has to be added !
Yep , it does demotivate the conscientious worker but such is the tribe of them , that even after knowing this they march on with the same original fervour
    They deserve a salute

    @Lalithambigai
Thanks for adding the real time contextual story !
And the most important thing is the disclaimer , any resemblance is of course coincidental despite everyone having similar experiences

:confundio1:You have successfully rubbed salt to the injury! Does this ('immoral' of the story) mean it's better to be lazy or mediocre on job?:sleeping1:

Heh! I enjoy the adapted and rehashed morals for modern sensibilities. These management-memed forwards are a hotbed for sentimental vs savvy debate. The conscientious donkey would have sweated and toiled under the flatter of the Man who played it off against the abstemious dog. I think the Man was clever to have recognized the supererogatory zeal in the donkey and the sobriety in the dog to muddle their roles benefiting from such switch.

Such Aesopian wisdom is as relevant to our sophisticated times as it was to the ancient or the pastoral ears.

In general, I enjoy the creativity in transplanting the searing fables to prevailing ethos despite their fractured narrative. Washer man back then. Fast forward! Management junkie now. Given, donkey like dogs and dog like donkeys are coarsely eager to be played off against each other by a sharp linchpin — the witted man. The setting has evolved, but, back then, and today, such wisdom reigns, just that shh shh..it is too implicit and not disclosed aloud.

    Man discovers loss.
    Both donkey and dog dismissed.
    D&D's jobs outsourced.
    Webcam installed.
All night crawlers immediately seen by outsource in Hyderabad, who can beep, and alert the Man.

Moral: As soon as donkey had seen enterprise systems failing, upper management behaving badly, she should'a updated the resume, and look for a job in a different place.
