We dont need Men to oppress Women. There are some women themselves who can be Proxy Male-Chauvinists.

I have noticed that these days there are some ladies who like to indulge in retro-snobbery . Maybe just to spite the over aggressive " feminists" .

These holier-than-you ladies will claim that our ancestor ladies had much better lives than the liberated modern lady . 'Because , in those days, men worked and women ran the home . No tension.'

This is such an ignorant belief by those who cannot lookbeyond their upperclass noses.

Have they never thought of women working in fields , labouring as potters and weavers throughout history, past and present ? In the past too , they worked and got bad treatment from their men . now , only because the upperclass women are going to offices to work, they think the world has changed and women are having double work.

The MCP-following ladies like to support the idea of keeping women behind the kitchen door ,by claiming women were venerated like goddeses in our culture.
They claim that our male ancestors glorified women by putting female names as their suffix. like Seetharam or Umamaheshwaran . As though that protected our grandmothers from marital rape or suffering a bigamous husband . Those oldenday's Janakiramans and Gowrishankars would be merrily having a concubine on the side too. So were our "non-working" grandmothers happy ?

It is irritating when useless talk of " old glory " is broadcast to large audiences in the form of talk shows , when almost everyday , every hour, everyminute , a woman somewhere faces some kind of molestation or harrassment. Why cant these people come out from The Past and open their eyes to the The Present ?

Recently , a widely admired lady performer proclaimed " Women are like Gold , hence should be locked up and watched over by their men " ( in different words maybe) unbelievable ! In which Ivory Tower is that lady living ?

And then there is that never ending bragging about glorious females from our past : avvayyar, kannagi, rani mangamma , velu nacchiar. But, for every one of those heroines, there were one thousand suffering women , about whom no body gives any quotes .

Talking of a just a few examples from Past is not going to make the life of present day women easier .

It has taken Women so long to break the chains and become educated and financially independent at least . With these weapons , she is not at the mercy of an abusive marriage but can earn her own bread honourably . Let us not be like crabs pulling down our own kind who are striving to move up.

Women today are not against making a home with husband and children . But only ask for understanding . Women dont want " to be like a man " ( that shows lack of selfworth ) , but to be Human Beings, with their deserved place under the sun. And they are not " asking " anyone to " give" them their due . They are taking and informing .

Those who cannot handle it can go and dwell on the past and cry for the glorious days of female enslavement .

Nice write up and great thoughts. True just because a word feminism is used , modern day women education and her career , she being responsible for herself is bashed by mostly WOMEN. Sometimes men are better in understanding problems of a woman(it is an irony). Recently I read about how pregnant women are given seats in public transport by men most of the time than another women. So all together moderate feminism has to be practiced in the society and also every woman should have Jhansi ki Rani instinct and be bold to face obstacles.

    Dear OP,

I totally agree with you. Women today definitely have it way better than the women yesterday, who was basically powerless though our scriptures talked of naari the shakti this that, big fundas, with no truth in it. Women today are educated & financially independent , which beats any other benefits of old times. Today, she has a mind of her own & ability to decide & stand up for herself!

And the claim that there was no tension in the past, bcoz there was clear delineation of responsibilities is total BS!!! What about all the tension & trauma she had to go through because she had no voice of her own, was exploited & beaten up every other day & had no option but to stick around in the relationship because she could not make an independent living on her own? I would take the current day tension & conflict any day of my life!!

Current day tension is totally solvable. If not by training our husbands, at least by raising our sons properly to share wife’s responsibilities in future & not discriminating while training son & daughter in childhood.

@sindmani hi, seeing you after some time. Do you have good news for us?

    Dear Madam,
I completely agree with you. Any day I would prefer life as of now than my mother or grandmother's day. Of course a lot has still to be done and we are progressing.
