    Dear Syamala:

Here is why. We face competition in real life and hence it becomes a race. Comparison drives the entire life in some cases. The children are told to be higher than cut-off grade in order to secure a seat. Every parent wants their children to lead a better life than them and hence it becomes a race.

What I was trying to say in this snippet is to take time to plan life for a long haul. The journey of life is so enjoyable and let us not miss enjoying it. How we lead our lives is much more important than the results we achieved. In Marathon, one is determined to increase endurance to withstand the obstacles, achieve one step at a time knowing there are many more steps to go, sometimes run for a cause (well-being of others), accept gracefully when others cheer at every stage and accept help or help other participants.

What you described above is exactly what I am trying to convey. We need to set our own goals and run with it rather than competing. As long as we are better tomorrow than today and we achieve sense of fulfillment every moment of life, we are doing great. Let us not worry about the results or comparing it with others. Being happy during our participation in life is as important as the end result.

    Dear Nandini,

Thank you for your wonderful response. So you learned about how to set your own goals when you were in school. If we are enjoying the journey of life, reaching the destination becomes easy and not painful. When we cross the obstacles, we learn something new and become stronger.

I agree with this statement. We never know how long we can run this life and therefore, every moment of life is so important. Helping people along the way and being grateful when people cheer or help us conduct our lives. Sometimes a part of our life span is spent for the well-being of others just like a Marathon is being run for cancer patients, etc., the happiness we feel after doing it is immeasurable.

I agree with your points of view and this is present and future.
    2. Lord Krishna had revealed several centuries ago to the warrior Arjuna the importance of doing one's duty without expecting or worried about result. He told by way of clarification to confused Arjuna at crucial moment about the goal and its worthiness.
    3. if one fails to remain materialistic in this mundane world he would probably become a laughing stock.
    Thanks and Regards.

    Dear Smt. Srinivasan:

Very well said about it is not the success that matters but choosing to practice right living is important. When the whole life runs in front of our eyes when we prepare ourselves to make the last breath, what we see in the screen should give a great sense of fulfillment and no regrets. It doesn't matter what we call life as. The inner journey is a long haul towards our destination and we need to remove all the obstacles on the way to keep traveling towards the destination. We need endurance and determination to do so. Having come from the source, we will always seek the source and it is our effort how strong we seek the source that gets us to the destination quicker.

    Dear Sri Thyagarajan:

Thank you for your feedback. You are right about the teachings of Lord Krishna to do things skillfully, lovingly and selflessly without expecting the results. One should enjoy every moment of life filled with right living and do actions to the best of one's ability, get indulged in every action with all of one's heart and give priority over the common good of people around us than our own self and expect no results.

Making a living can never be considered as materialistic and that is why I used the term "avarice" which means "extreme greed for wealth or material gain". Anxiously waiting for inheritance, stealing it from the siblings, negotiating with a novice to get excessive gain without bothering about righteousness, etc. can and will be considered as extreme greed for wealth or material gain.

    Dear Sri Thyagarajan,

Scratching the surface of this planet to make a living is different from going after material possession in a short time by devious means. In Purshartha, Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha are all part. Dharma stands for righteous way to lead a life and Artha is for making a living in that righteous way. Love is to recognize every being is from the same source and Moksha is the merger with the source. There is no life in which the part of the source will not seek the source. In fact, that is the main purpose and all other acts are secondary. That is why I feel right attitude and acceptance of life, self-belief, character development, discipline in life and endurance to reach the goal are all important. That is the purpose of this snippet.

Marathon is a reflection of life which is like a rainbow -appears only when it rains as well as shines. But race becomes a necessity some times.A Dog boasted that it can outrun anybody.Just then a rabbit crossed and the dog was challenged to catch it.When a while later it returned without the rabbit it confessed that it could not catch the rabbit because it was running for its life whereas,he was running for his dinner.
Your article calls for introspection whether we are running a marathon or race whenever we undertake an activity.
