I use jaggery instead of sugar in a lot of ways. Starting with morning milk, afternoon tea, muffins. I find that I cannot substitute jaggery wholly for sugar. Instead i add 1/4 tsp of sugar and 3/4 tsp of jaggery instead of 1tsp of sugar. Works well for me.

get good quality jaggery. jaggery has lots of health benefits but still is calorie loaded. so have it with moderation.

chewing a piece of jaggery with little jeera can reduce acidity.

the interesting thing that i have seen is low quality jaggery is used to treat roof (along with other herbs) in traditional constructions. the mixture is left soaking and fermented and then allowed to soak in the roof before tiling..this ensured it was leakproof.

roasted chana dal(pottukadalai), a little puffed rice and pieces of acchu vellam ( a type of moulded jaggery) was snack when i was a kid..i believe this combination prooved to be a iron, calcium and protein rich snack.

Jaggery helps prevent and relieve constipation by stimulating bowel movements. It activates the digestive enzymes in our body and thus helps in proper digestion of your food. It also is an excellent source of iron, a mineral that plays a key role in the production of haemoglobin. It helps detoxify your liver by flushing out harmful toxins from your body. Jaggery is loaded with antioxidants and minerals like zinc and selenium, which help prevent free-radical damage and also boost resistance against infections.
