Hello my baby is 15 months old and is mildly anemic. The normal lower end range should be 10.5 and she is 9.9. For the past 2 months she has been taking iron supplements, but there has been absolutely no change in her iron levels.

I have been giving her juice and pieces of fruit along with the iron drops and following the recommendations of the doctor by giving cheerios and other iron rich foods (ground lamb, broccolli, spinach, oatmeal, nuts etc etc...).

Out of desperation I also recently started adding 1 small tsp of blackstrap molasses to her oatmeal as its supposed to increase iron (even though it is cane sugar).

Has anyone else had a similar experience? What else can I do to increase her iron levels. Her levels dont have to increase a whole lot for her to be in the normal range, so was wondering whether there are any other foods I could give her.

She has one more month of supplements to go before our pediatrician recommends a specialist (hematologist) if her levels dont increase.

    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    cooks

hey chicken liver has lot of iron, its hard for adults to eat it but cut it into mini mini peices and add it with veggies... fish, turkey...

bread you can give it with milk...

you can give her eggs too once a day..

spinach you can cook with eggs and give it,its like fry with very little oil..

lentils you can cook it, mix it with rice and give it... you can make lentil rasam too..

Goat liver is the best source of iron. Iron from meat gets absorbed very quickly than vegetables. I had the same issue with my daughter. And my doctor recommended it..I also started her on mutton soups every alternate day.
Within a month..I could see the difference and she is not anaemic anymore.

Vegetarian sources of iron are absorbed better by the body when citric acid is present. So apricots with oj, squeeze of lemon over broccoli/ spinach will increase absorption of iron into the body

Include beetroots, pomegranates, spinach, raisins, dates regularly in her meals. Give her adequate vitamin C to increase absorption (oranges, lemon juice added to veggies/rice, cabbage, strawberries).

Try giving fig. Fig is the good treatment for aneamic. you can also try giving her beetroot juice but instead of adding sugar, add some jaggery. This helps a lot

Your doctor should have given you a list with all amounts of iron listed. It's available on the web by the association of american pediatrics as well.
You are supposed avoid consuming calcium or magnesium containg foods with or 2 hours before or after eating iron because it will cause the iron to be less obsorbed.
usually iron gets injected if it's too low, so I really wouldn't worry much and see what the specialist has to say about it, if this will not improve. Some people also have problems absorbing iron due to stomach issues but that is something that the specialist will determine.

Thanks everyone!! I will try the beetroot idea (didnt know that) and soak raisins. I will also give her dates to eat...I have those in the fridge. I will look around for figs, not sure where to get them. I like the idea of squeezing lemon juice over broccoli, will try that.

I will try to find goat /chicken liver and figure out a way to give it to her. Soups she doesn't like any..so doesn't seem to like the concept of drinking liquid from a spoon!!...its too slow for her when shes really hungry. Will keep on working on that.

    Great suggestions!!, thank you.

Wheatgrass is the best source for acute aneamia. but keep that as the last option.

give her food that has been discussed here.
