re: How To Stitch a fall to a saree?

Thanks everyone for posting tips on how to stitch falls to a saree. i got the saree, falls and matching thread from india, since no time to get it stitched there. but now the saree has been not done for almost a yr. hopefully i will get it done before diwali.

Jayashree, if you could post the picture of a locking stitch it will be great. is there any other stitch i can use for lower edge of the falls with sewing machine? will a regular straight machine stitch work for the lower edge?
my saree is one of those thin silky type material with hand embroidery and chamki work done on it. so it looks very delicate.

    Thanks,
    Chaaral

    Hai vani,
    Thanks for your reply.
The stitch method which u explained in the step 2 should be used in stitching the upper edge of the fall or what ?
I didn't understand that stitch can you explain in datail?
If the thread is only inside the fall then how will be the fall attached to saree?:bonk:bonk:bonk:bonk:bonk.
As I don't have any experience in stitches I am getting this sort of doubts:bonk:bonk:bonk:bonk
And also please tell me how to stitch the sides of fall also?
    Thanks in advance
    Bye

Vani thanks for the tutorial. so first i should stitch the lower edge of the fall to the saree and then start with the upper edge right?

    thanks!

Re: How To Stitch a fall to a saree?

1.If your saree fall is cotton, please wash and iron it before you sew it on.
2.Make sure the saree is ironed as well.
3.Again, if it's a cotton saree, probably better to fix the fall after you've worn and washed the saree at least once, to allow for any shrinkage.
    4. Start about 2-3 inches from the inside edge and attach the lower border of the fall to the wrong side of the sari ( easy to get the wrong side confused with some type of chiffon sarees, eg Garden ) using a small running stitch or back stitch or even just machine stitching if you're not too fussy . The two narrow edges of the fall may be folded in first since these will be raw ( unstitched).
    5. Spread out the sari on a flat surface ( floor or large dining table )taking care so that the weight of the sari does not hang over the table .
    6. Attach the remaining edge of the fall using hemstitch or running stitch taking care to smooth out the sari fabric frequently to achieve a smooth finish. Try to make the stitches as invisible as possible on the right side.
    7. Stand back and admire your work ! You just saved yourself some money, time and petrol you might have spent on a visit to the tailor !
