Hello, Did you think that television is sending the wrong signals? Read our take: How Television Series Are Sending Wrong Messages Please do share your views and feedback. Regards, Moumita
Moumita, I second you. While people are moving forward towards an open mind and outlook, many TV shows are hell bent to portray women vulnerable. Especially, Gopi Bahu in Saath Nibhana Saathiya. The way they shaped up the character is too unrealistic. The character speaks as slowly as possible and manages to get on my nerves. We badly need TV shows that are placed in normal and natural dropbacks aiming to target/represent real situations rather than unrealistic scenarios. Such TV shows create a lot of negative influence on their viewers. All they do is drag you away from what is called "Normal" and "Real".
An important point. We also have serials like 'Saas Bina Sasural' which enforce stereotypes which existed in the 19th century. Women should not work, they should sit at home and cook, wash everyone's clothes, sweep, swab, and clean the toilet. the father-in-law in the serial actually bans the family from having a maid he says, "ghar ka kaam ghar ki auraten kare toh hi shobha hain". this is an extremely chauvinistic view of things. it is also not how things work today.
Thank you for the likes, Moumita and Freespirit I would also like to add that some of the serials give the idea that patience and suffering will ultimately give a good outcome. Eg. if someone is mistreating you, put up with it, bear it, smile, do not air out your woes. after sometime, the offending party will 'realise their errors' and 'return' to the person, and 'seek forgiveness'. In real life if you are stupid enough to do something like that, people will happily walk all over you. This portrayal is giving the wrong message to young ladies of today. We must instead empower them to stand up for themselves. An example here can be Mona Singh of 'Kya Hua Tera Vada'. She steps up to the challenge, is never the 'abala naari', is strong, and is truly a fighter. there should be more characters like her.
