In my world not everyone around me deserves to know the truth.
I lie if someone doesn't deserve to know the truth.
I don't believe that people are incapable of lying.
It is just they need hasn't arrived. If need comes every human being is capable of lying.

    Totally agree.

I liked "someone doesn't deserve to know the truth".

I should have added in the first post, that all truth about lies is welcome, but thread is more about lies told in person. : )

Reason I started thread was that yesterday I met a person, and found myself glibly giving an airy update about a matter that is currently a 'raw nerve' for me.

I knew I would be meeting him/her, and the question would come up, so I was prepared. But, the ease and flow in my sentences caught me a bit by surprise. I preempted the question, halted it before it went too long, started off my response with a "white lie" (yeah things are good.. some days are good, other days I think of the good days), introduced something positive, and then brought in Trump and the prospect of another 4 years being a worse problem.

I could view my response as a neat deflection of an unwanted question, but it wasn't. I just didn't want to elaborate on the topic, so I had a premeditated canned response ready. It was a lie, in part by prevarication and in part by omission.

One other "lie" on the topic actually got recorded on my Ring camera. Was talking to a friend who had dropped by, and we often talk at the front door only because we know if she comes inside, it will become a long chat session. I generally don't monitor Ring so much on my phone, but better-half was waiting for an important package delivery, so he was checking each Ring notification. My mortification was complete when he showed me the conversation later that night.

    :hello:@Rihana
it is irresistable to add here that friend I mentioned in above feedback was only an acquaintance in the camp and turned out to be from a different college and belong to a celebrity son at that point of time. His dad was number 2 in the party that was ruling tamilnadu then. Later this acquaintance turned close friend for three long years and through his amiship I could help a few.
A courageous lie uttered in good time results in doing good deeds later and pays rich dividends eventually.
Tenaliraman & two thieves is a solid example how turn could be used For constructive purposes. Here is the link:

God - Let's me lie always for the social good.

How early do people decide whether or not someone needs to know the truth ?

I was reminded of a story I had once read about a child with his plush toy. When his mummy woke him up one morning, she slipped her hand under the child and felt the mattress. It was wet.

She asked the child:"...Uh..oh...it is wet again... Who did that?". The child held up the toy and said "he did it". A moment the mummy could always recall, and savour in her later life.

Lying is too dang much trouble. As I get older, I'm less willing to make the effort and I'm more willing to tell it like it is and let the chips fall where they may.

I lie to kids though. I'm happy to invent stories to spare their little feelings and make them happy. Adults have to deal.

    An example:
My nephew knows I often text with Santa and put in a good word for him.
His mom knows exactly what she did and why Santa brought her son a drum set last Christmas. :smilingimp:
