No one else can define your personal sense of morality, your sense of right and wrong beyond what is socially and legally prescribed.

"How far should compassion extend?" - is an ever existing ethical dilemma.
'Survival of the fittest 'theory holds everywhere.This is how normal human beings are wired.Under normal circumstances a person cannot be expected to go beyond that programmed instinct in human beings.Every one has got a circle of five to ten members for whom he/she will( may) take any risk under extreme circumstances.The whole idea of compassion, especially about taking life risk, works only on interdependence.
Many pragmatists advise to take a quick analysis about the chances of saving the person and then decide because on any day two lives lost is worse than one life lost.Moral obligation towards one's own family is greater compared to strangers.
No doubt, such acts deserve lot of accolades. If proved successful, he deserves all honors. But on the contrary, if the attempt proves futile, his entire family would have to suffer.If a person is single and has no one to take care of, he can take risk and plunge into action.
