How do you store rice in the US? In India, my mom would store rice in big steel dabba/ box.

As a student in the US, I just left rice in the rice bag and there was just 1 bag. Every couple of month roommates and I had to buy a new bag.

Now.. I have couple of rice bags :BangHead:
My DH does paleo and the rice is just for me and DS. The rice isn't the fastest moving item in my house.
Currently, I have 3 rice bags
1 bag sona masoori ( everyday use past 3 months)
1 bag of Idli rice ( from my MIL's last year June visit) I hardly do idli/dosa. This rice bag hasn't been touched at all for more than 2-3 times after MIL's visit.
1 bag of parboiled rice (my GD diet/postpartum):sweat:

I have just left it in their individual bags. I am not too happy about it. I dont have the heart to throw away the unused rice bags :(

Want to know if there is any kinda of bigger rice box's that I can get to store different rice?
    or
What do you guys do? How do you store the rice in the US?

We have a couple of Sterilite boxes for this, one for idly rice and one for khana rice. But yeah, rice is a staple in our family, as idly/dosa, and rice per se.. so turnover is nearly monthly.

Why not get smaller bags/packets of rice if you dont use that much?

I am the only dedicated rice eater at home, so I buy the smallest bags possible for the staples such as jasmine and basmati rice. I get the more exotic varieties such as red, black and wild rice in tiny amounts from the bulk food bins. I get the big sacks only when my parents visit. We don't have insects, so I leave the large bags down in the basement pantry and just bring up as needed. You can store rice in flour buckets which come in different sizes. For example:
    Flour Bucket Large
For kitchen storage I like to OXO Pop containers:

I have a few steel boxes from India. Plus some glass containers purchased locally.

Thank you, ladies. I really appreciate your response. I will purchase a couple of suggested items and put it to good use.

I bring in small rice bags for myself. Even the small bag comes over a 3-5 months for me and DS.
The idli rice is my MIL purchase with my DH- both of them literally have no patience when it comes to shopping or looking for the right quantity.

If you really have too much to finish in a reasonable amount of time see if you can donate it. I think food banks will only take intact packages but maybe your local temple could use it.

@MalStrom- Good idea. Thanks. I do have some unreasonable amount. Especially idli rice 20lb and parboiled rice 5lbs.
