If I were you, I would first of all check my US Credit history. Look into your Tri bureau credit report and get an idea of loans, mortgages, credit cards, foreclosures in your name. You live in India. You have no control over your credit. Make sure your credit history is kosher. If you have access to his social security etc you could check his credit report too. The credit report will give you your financial situation.

Once you have it in hand, you can decide how you would like to proceed.
