    Thank you very much for 'fourthing' Rihna's mouthwatering post Sambhar Uninterrupted
    My late sister in law who was a fabulous cook used to have this placard in the kitchen: 'Do not disturb. An artist at work'. I wonder if Rihana has such a message in her kitchen.
    This line reminds me of a scene in a famous Tamil movie in which the hero obssessed with Garuda Purana throws the cook in the sambar he makes!
    Very well articulated word of appreciation! Thanks a lot for whetting my appettite for good reading.

    @jskls must be feeling elated that she has generations of admirers. I am referring to the nomination of her post Battle With Batter by Geeta and viji. A gap of 41 minutes has pushed Viji to the second place. We can still call it a 'photo finish'.
    Typically this post should have preceded @Rihana 's Sambar story but considering how people in hotels consume more Sambar than the iddlies, this seems ok. jskls had made a mention of Ratna Cafe in her thread. I have been visiting this hotel for over six decades but I must say that their Sambar has become completely watered down now. It used to be devine in the '50s. Not anymore.

    Coming to the Iddly story, the old system of grinding the batter in the stone grinder used to be a fascinating sight. I have never seen greater coordination between the right and left hands than while grinding iddly batter. The left hand turning the grinder and the right hand pushing the batter back into the pit used to be a fascinting picture. With the invention of noisy electrical grinder, the stone grinders have disappeared like the sparrows of Chennai. The batter takes several forms over a week with iddly taking avatars like dosa, oottappam, iddly uppuma and so on. The innovative South Indians!
