    Dear IL Members,

I wish each and everyone of you a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2017. Let this new year bring the best in each one of us as our potential is enormous like a reservoir and a lot more can be achieved. Our strength together is powerful and when we unite, we can create a world that is ideal for every life in existence.

January is a very special month in various parts of the world. In Kutch region, Rann Utsav, a desert festival highlights the vibrancy of this region's culture and heritage. The days are filled with folk dances and music, adventure sports, handicrafts, food stalls, and excursions to surrounding destinations. Hundreds of luxury tents are set up on the fringe of the white salt desert to accommodate visitors.

Hugely popular Chennai Music Festival is a much anticipated month long festival, which is often described as the world's largest cultural event, serves up a plethora of traditional south Indian Carnatic music, dance, and other arts. Over 1,000 performances take place during the festival and a lot of international travelers proceed to Chennai from all parts of the world to participate in this event.

In Sabarmati River Front, International Kite Festival is celebrated decorating the sky with colorful kites from sunrise to sunset. This marks the occasion of Makar Sankaranti (the transition of sun into the northern hemisphere).

In Bikaner Camel Fair conducted at Rajasthan, the festival kicks off with a procession of camels decorated in their finest attire, and continues on with camel beauty pageants, camel races, and camel dancing. Can camels dance? If anyone likes to find the answer, its worth attending this festival just to see the performance! The festival ends with entertainment by Rajasthani folk artists, and fireworks.

January is also a very special month around the world. January 6th is celebrated in Venezuela as La Pradura del Nino and it is a celebration for Jesus as a baby. The 12th night after Christmas is celebrated in Europe where people go out to sing and drink to the health of their friends, family, pets and crops. January 15th is celebrated in Korea Daeboreum and it is a celebration of the first full moon of the year. January 20th is celebrated in the US as Martin Luther King, Jr.'s day.

Here in IL, let us celebrate the new year with your valuable nominations of your fellow ILites' contributions for the month of January 2017. It is not only your contribution but also your nominations of the contributions made by fellow ILites that makes this community vibrant and interesting.

Once again, my best wishes for a wonderful 2017.

    Viswa

    Dear Vijiakka,

Thank you for your first nomination of @suryakala's Thiruppavai - Andal's Divine Melodies.. Reading her excellent presentation moved me back 52 years into my childhood days (I was 10 years old). My mother used to wake me up at 5 a.m. to participate in the series of event in Perumal Koil 7 blocks away from our residence. Even if I mother slept for a little longer, the loud speakers used to wake us up with a song, "Karpagha Valliyin Porpathangal panindhen, Nargathi arulvayamma". I lived in a small town called Neyveli which has equal population of believers and non-believers. We had only two temples in town, one Perumal Koil and another Murugan Temple. Those who developed the township left these old Temples as is, as they found it hard to demolish them. Later these temples were renovated by the effort of the township administration.

As the non-believers celebrated meetings of Dravidan moments, believers used to invite special speakers and gather during December-January time frame. I used to be in the Temple by 5:30 a.m. to listen to Thiruppavai everyday sung by those nicely attired priests with great discipline in a melodious voice. Like Swamy Renganatha in Srirangam, we used to have Perumal in a sleeping posture nicely attired for the occasion. At the end of the event, sharp at 6 or 6:30 a.m., they used to distribute a piping hot Pongal soaked in Ghee to all of us. My non-believer friends used to make fun of me for attending the prayers everyday but I used to ignore their comments and focus on my prayers. But they never interfered or prevented me from attending this prayer sessions.

I can never forget those memories for the rest of my life.

    Viswa

    Dear Balajee,

Thank you for nominating @UMAKUMAR's Demons On The Prowl. It is an invaluable nomination and I am glad you are the first to nominate it. I have given a detailed response in the thread itself as I had so much to say about it. It is little lengthy but I had no choice but to say as much as I could.

    Dear Vijiakka,

Thank you for nominating @jayasala42's Upavas And Nobel Prize to the FP section. As usual, she has done her research so well and articulated her thought equally good. Reading the headline, I was wondering what fasting has to do with Noble Prize. After reading her snippet, I understood what he was getting at. I have already given my detailed response directly in her snippet.

I loved @Viswamitra 's post on Jallikattu. A nuanced write up & a measured response countering arguments supporting jallikattu.

I strongly identified with his point of view in that the issue is not the practice of jalli kattu as it should be but rather the animal abuse that happens in the absence of checks & measures to ensure standards are adhered to.
