Hi..will be vacationing in India around July.Planning a family trip with elders and a six year old. Can you suggest best places near Bangalore? Have been to ooty, kodai,Kerala already.. Need to plan a good trip.I thought god but I don’t think it’s a good place with elders and a child..Any other suggestions?
Along with above mentioned places, you can see Coorg too. Also kabini( Jungle Safari. Not sure if it suits to elders). There are many places in karnataka for the ancient sculptures and Temple architecture. If you are interested in that, look into places like Hassan, hampi, somnathpura( thalabathi song Temple), talakad, Shravanabelagola,belur.. I just remember these places now. Will add on more places later.
The joy of a local holiday trip would depend on how long is the india holiday, to make allowances for jetlag-recovery, and time consumed in political visits to two sets of local relatives, old college/school friends, and local shopping. what the elders order one to do, and the NRI trying hard not to act uppity (like an NRI) and showing deference to their wishes. Nice places at short distances from Bangalore are already mentioned. I would recommend making one week each buffer time, before and after the holidays with elders and foreign-trained child. The time before would be to get over the jetlag, have the child acclimatize to the local conditions, and the time after would be to recover from the excitement experienced at the wherever, and get ready to go home. Bangalore is such a good place in itself. New things are cropping up every day in all the familiar street corners too. And besides ( I remembered your anguish about child rejecting bharatanaatyam classes) this could be an opportunity to foist some culture on the child. Go to some dance concerts, and let her see the world of the native haute couture (in the audience) as well as see her own age children appreciating the culture. Loss of this cultural inoculation opportunity would add to the intangibles cost of going on a holiday somewhere, and discovering new toilet facilities.
