Slim & fair are the two important aspect vaidehi never had
She was the only daughter of her dad, and too pampered with so many servants in the house she hardly got to do anything in the kitchen, where it was her mother’s domain and no entry board.

Once in a while her father used to insist that she make something then she would prepare morkozhambu or vatha kozhambu alternating as that is the only thing her mother never used to make as she did not like those dishes..

Though a plump personality she was the most active and doing so many other things like looking into the garden, taking care of her father’s clothes getting laid, and bed being done all the servants did under her supervision, they liked this didi a lot, and sometime she used to take the pets for walks around the block as her father was a government employee was allotted big bungalows and spacious place around with the blocks entry had the gurkhas standing guard, so none can walk in easily so more leisure and less traffic inside the area.…

Her father was having a tough time getting a groom for vaidehi, all had only one thing either she should had been slim or fair and so on, now the desperateness on the father’s part could be understood, in those days a girl who is in early 20s is better off married than well educated, with flying colors she passed her graduation but that had no effect on the father, as he was interested that she become the dil of some nice house hold..

Then his friend colonel sundharam brought in an alliance of another pampered boy, and when the boy sriram saw vaidehi and the surroundings he was just thrilled and agreed to marry, now this arrangement has been done without the approval of his only sister vishalam, who had a say in all the matters and when they came over to see vaidehi, she and her periamma were not all that pleased, what with the girl being so big and dark, whereas they were all so fair and slim, she would not suit the household..

It was learnt later that her father mahadevan, had given her a diamond necklace to agree to vaidehi going to their home, now this discreet arrangement had been done only with the father of the groom and his sister, only later sriram was informed about this.

The grand marriage has been the talk of the town for many years to come, some felt sriram did not deserve as he was not educated enough, but looked handsome and some felt vaidehi is not worthy of sriram as he is so handsome and get a nice girl for all his looks and so on…
Vaidehi slowly settled down and was helping her periamma mom in law with all the things needed and learnt a little about their household cooking, as cooking was her favorite hobby it was easier to blend into the atmosphere and learn every thing.
The father in law was also happy that she was cooking well and all was well in the house when…

A year passed and visalam was chiding what happened no news of any child, still sriram and vaidehi never got into any verbal with her but still she continued, I told him not to get into these relations kettaana avan always he makes up his mind all on his own and now with so much of fat around how is she going to get pregnant at all in the first place.

Though vaidehi was very hurt with all these words, she and sriram were planning not to have the baby in the first year itself as he wanted to settle down and then have it and here his sister was trying to pile up blames as she did not like vaidehi in the first place, so any amount of affectionate approach by vaidehi was
    Re- buffed away.

The great day also arrived and vaidehi was carrying and her father was rejoiced and happy at last his daughter has announced something great and a little one would be around, there was more re-joice in the vaidehi home front but not in her in laws as they were now worried how the complexion of the child would be.

One day visalam came home with a small tiny box and gave it to vaidehi, it was kumkumapoo [kesar] telling her please take this daily with some milk so that the child that comes will be fair like us..
Vaidehi knew this is another dig at her, again just left it at that, some people never change and she knowing the cause was from base could do nothing about it now.

Her favorite mama arrived with some sweets and plenty of fruits which her father had sent through him there were alphonso mangoes from Mumbai, and some pineapple from assam all these fruits came from their original place and vaidehi was as usual pampered but in her inlaws they would not even share a piece of the mango, which made her sad, some things in life never come easy, she hoped that some day the child after its arrival may create an affable atmosphere for the family to come together..

The child did arrive and she was a little dark not so dark but a little but then poor thing she was the darling of her mom and dad but not to her thatha her dad’s father, who saw she was dark and reserved his affection…

After a few years along came the second child which was very fair more than any one in the house and sriram was running around telling this could not be my child like the goundamani joke in a film and his athai had to tell him that the little one is an exact replica of the mother he never saw…
some of my friend ask as long as vaidehi and sriram are fine then leave it but here sriram will listen to his sister word to word so one can expect what vaidehi is going through..

Some category needed even for affection? In laws are breeds apart…what say you..sunkan

    Dear Sunkan,

A very interesting topic. Yes there is a lot of flak given to a lot ladies in India who are a little more tanned. The are often an object of ridicule and I have even heard people suggest them various remedies for getting fairer. Its a very anxious moment for a pregnant mother who is tanned ,about the complexion of her child.... Sad people never look beyond the physical beauty
The whole uproar about Shilpa Shetty being harassed in the name of racism was very ironic, actually because in her own country she was facing a lot of ridicule due to her dark tan , but anyway now when Jade called her dark it became world news. Wonder what the world would say when they know that we treat our very own ladies differently on the basis of their colour.
I salute my Fathers family in this regard. All the male members were very dashing charismatic personalities and had one unspoken rule among them all the uncles, nephews etc: They would marry the first lady shown to them irrespective of their physical appearance and true to their word they all did.
Well now they mustnt have married very beautiful ladies but they all have very beautiful and peaceful homes to live.

    Love,
    Devika

    Dear S

Really well told. I agree with you. Fair & slim matters a lot atleast in the arena of marriage.

Also to note that women are the enemies for another women. They just cannot tolright when things are going on smoothly with their near & dear ones and finally they will come up with ellam unnodai nallathukku dhaan soneinen. What say you dear !
