While the term euthanasia garnered sufficient response due to the Supreme Court verdict, how does the law view those doctors in India, who inflict pain and suffering through their bizarre methods of treatment.

You can hardly find a good doctor these days, who does a honest diagnosis of the illness of a patient. They do not even write prescriptions for medicines but handout sample medicines given to them by the medical representatives. If the patient is lucky, he will get cured, otherwise the doctors will make a mountain out of a molehill out of his illness. They will prescribe various blood tests. The pathology, the clinics and the medical shops seem to act in a concerted manner. Most physicians have their own ECG and other test kits for experimenting on their hapless patients. Then they will suggest a multi-speciality hospital of their choice and get the patient admitted there.

While there are not many beds in hospitals vis-à-vis the population of sick people in India, the fact remains that while admission to hospitals remain out of bounds for some, getting out of hospitals after getting admitted is equally strenuous exercise. The doctors will see to it that the last drop of money will be extracted from the patient and then only discharge them as fit.

Then there are those doctors, who make the condition of the patients so critical through their methods of treatment that the respective patients have no choice but take a second opinion in other hospital. If at all, he gets better through another line of treatment, law provides no protection to the respective patient and he will never think of suing the doctor who provided him a wrong line of treatment. Many a time, the attendants and the nurses will treat the patient so shabbily as if he has created a sin for becoming sick.

Coming back to the theme of euthanasia, many activists have pointed out that legalizing euthanasia will lead to its misuse. In reality, there are many instances of old people who cherish the thought of getting sick and having their kith and kin at their beck and call. Not all that is old is always gold. There are many rotten elders out here. Whoever attends to such patients do get in a dilemma. They will get no recognition for looking after such patients who garner all the sympathy. Sometimes, I feel that euthanasia should be given to those who look after the patients.

Excellent article! Loved the last lines especially :thumbsup
Euthanasia cannot be justified for the same reason that death penalty cannot be, who are we to take some one's life and why should we play God?
