I had and have this doubt for many years! And till now I couldn’t conclude.

Why do people (who share the same mother tongue) talk in English to each other?

I have come across many who spoke in English to me, in spite of sharing the same language.

I am just curious! Would be happy to know your opinions and thoughts on this.

I have had experiences where the person would actually be talking the regional language with her family/friends. But immediately when they talk to me , they speak in English.

I have just felt like they are trying to show off. My mother had another point of view. She used to say maybe they think I will not understand regional language. There is slight truth because, Iam actually a Gujarati settled in the south. So maybe people can identify from the appearances.

And there are my uncles(some) who speak in Tamil and not in our mother tongue even to us. Even when we respond in our language, they would continue in Tamil. Feels weird honestly.

Mother tongue is great. No doubt in it. All languages are beautiful. Our mother
Tongue will always be in our heart as that is what we all learnt first. First is always best.
English is again an easy language, common language too. So due to its easiness
SOME only some prefer to talk in it most of the time

    Thanks for responding!!

Very often even I feel this should be the reason!!! It may not be true though!

Your mother might be right I guess!!!

May be they don't know your language? So they are talking in the only language they know(which may be tamil).

Nono they very well know my language. I fail to understand why they would want to talk in Tamil with us relatives. So this makes me think maybe they really feel comfortable in Tamil.

May be! As you said they might be comfortable in Tamil. In a similar way, thats what I was thinking...Are we Indians "really" more comfortable with English that we refrain from talking in our mother tongue...

Different kinds 1)Some people really like English so they talk
    2) some people think talking in English is something higher so they talk to their own language people and family members in English.
    3) children brought up abroad talk in English with their own people too .

Haha.. I somehow believe people are comfortable when it comes to regional language. But when it is English, I really doubt our people:thinking:. With the craze for English communication I mostly presume there are trying to show off:facepalm:.
